HOCKEY (w): McGill plays "big mean", skunks Big Green in cross-border confrontation

HANOVER, NH – Kellyane Lecours tallied three points and goaltender Amanda Hadwen registered a shutout as McGill skunked the NCAA's Dartmouth College 6-0 in women's preseason hockey at Thompson Arena, Sunday.

McGill improved to 49-67-9 lifetime against NCAA schools, including a 7-5-1 record against Dartmouth, with a to 3-0-1 undefeated streak since their last setback to the Big Green, a 2-1 loss on Oct. 16, 2015.

Despite being outshot 36-24, the game was never in doubt as McGill led 2-0 after one period and 4-0 after two. Lecours, a native of Victoriaville, Que., tallied twice and added a helper, while Hadwen, a neuroscience junior from Ottawa, made a career-high 36 saves to earn her third shutout in four games.

"She made a couple of really good saves," noted head coach Peter Smith of his 5-foot-7 netminder. "Her last game was against Queen's (a 7-6 win) and she wasn't as sharp as she would have liked to have been but she bounced back today.

"It was good to end to a long road-trip in a game where we played well offensively. We got a positive note to take on the bus ride home. We had eight very good games and we're tuned up and ready to go for the regular season."

Mackenzie McCallum, a rookie from Morden, Man., scored her first career goal on her first shift of the game to put the Martlets ahead at the 2:23 mark.

Lecours, a kindergarten and elementary education junior, made it 2-0 about 10 minutes later with her first of two goals.

McGill added a pair of late goals in the middle period, with Lecours striking at the 14:14 mark, followed by Christiana Colizza at 19:53

In the final period, Jade Downie-Landry netted a power-play goal at 4:45 while blueliner Emilia Cotter -- who tallied for the third straight contest -- added a shorthanded empty-netter at 15:42. Downie-Landry, who also had a three-point soiree, concluded her preseason with a team-leading 15 points, including eight goals -- in eight games, .

Hannah Humphreys took the loss in nets for Dartmouth, conceding five goals on 24 pucks fired her way.

McGill, which went 1-for-2 on the power play and was perfect on all four penalty kills, concluded its preseason with a 6-2 record, including a 5-1 mark against Canadian university teams. The Martlets open their regular season on Saturday, Oct. 19 against Concordia, in a 2 p.m. puck drop at McConnell Arena.

Dartmouth, which posted an 0-2 preseason record -- including a 3-2 loss to Concordia in overtime -- opens its regular campaign at home against Harvard on Oct. 25.
