MONTREAL --
Elizabeth Hirsch posted a silver-medal finish, as the McGill University women's cross-country squad finished second of 15 teams at the RSEQ-UNB interlocking meet, held at Parc Maisonneuve, Saturday.
Kara Blair, a distance runner from Queen's University, led the Gaels to the meet title, finishing first of 143 entries, completing the eight-kilometre course in 29 minutes, six seconds. Her teammate,
Makenna Fitzgerald, won bronze in 29:25.
Hirsch, who hails from Melrose, Mass., finished second in 29:17. The 21-year-old biology senior has reached the podium in all three of her meets thus far, winning one gold and a pair of silvers.
Others in the scoring for McGill included
Sandrine Veillette (8th, 30:19),
Chloe Fleurent-Gregoire (14th; 30:59),
Laura Carlton (19th; 31:04) and
Brianna Mendes (28th; 31:27).
The Queen's women led all 15 teams with 49 points, followed by Laval (67), McGill (68), Montreal (89) and UQTR (142), to round out the top five.
On the men's side, Laval won the meet, led by
Jean-Simon Desgagnes, who was first of 174 entries, winning gold in 24:48.
Mitchell Delange from Queen's claimed silver in 24:49, while Laval's
Jonathan Tedeschi won third in 24:55.
Henry Wellenstein was McGill's top runner, finishing 39th overall in 26:46. Other leading results from McGill included
Simon Bernier (58th; 27:24),
Noah Elrimawi-Fine (63rd; 27:38),
Olivier Cyr (79th; 28:11) and
Jeremy Obrand (117th; 29:07).
Laval won the 15-team competition with 27 points, followed by Queen's (55) and St.FX (122). McGill was 10th overall with 250 points.
