Lac St. Louis boys rally to win battle of the sexes over hockey Martlets

MONTREAL -- Ben Koehler of Pte. Claire, Que., potted a pair of goals as the Lac St. Louis Tigers, a boys midget espoirs team from Montreal's West Island region, defeated the McGill women's hockey squad 6-2, Saturday, in the annual battle of the sexes at McConnell Arena.

Koehler, who also scored in last year's win over McGill, serves as an alternate captain and merited the game's first star honours in front of his grandfather, Dick Irvin, a Hockey Hall of Fame broadcaster who skated for the McGill Redmen from 1951 to 1953.

The Martlets have now dropped seven of 10 confrontations with boys teams since head coach Peter Smith began the annual experiment to give his Martlets a highly-competitive match-up, usually scheduled during the preseason.

Trailing 2-1 after two periods, the Tigers, who outshot McGill 40-29, roared back with five unanswered goals in the final eight minutes of the contest. The contest took only an hour and 55 minutes to play as only one penalty was called -- against Lac St. Louis -- but McGill was unable to capitalize.

Tigers defenceman Nelson Smith of Pte. Claire, Que., opened scoring early with a goal at 0:36 of the first period but McGill freshman Laura Jardin of Calgary, Alta., tied the game at 9:58 with her third goal in 17 career games. Teammate Stephanie Desjardins of Grand Falls, N.B., put the women ahead 2-1 at 10:52 of the second period with her fourth of the season.

In the final period, Djibril-James Toure of Pte. Claire, tied the game 2-2 at 12:12 and just 65 seconds later, Alessandro DelPeshio from Pierrefonds, Que., netted the game-winner at 13:17. Robbie David of Kirkland, Que., made it 4-2 at 14:44 and Koehler added back-to-back markers to put the game out of reach at 16:33 and 17:26.

Goaltender Numa Genest-Binding of Beaconsfield, Que., played the entire game between the pipes for the visitors and turned aside 27 of 29 shots for the win.

Netminder Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., started for McGill and was relieved after one period, kicking aside eight of nine shots. Amanda Hadwen, a science sophomore from Ottawa, saved 26 of 28 but was saddled with the loss. Deguire returned between the pipes with 5:25 left in the final stanza and was beaten three times on successive shots. She finished the contest with eight saves on 12 shots in just over 25 minutes of playing time.

The Martlets, who hadn't played since a 3-2 win at Concordia on Dec. 1, dropped to 13-6-1 overall. They sit second in the RSEQ conference with an 8-2 record and will return to regular season play on Jan. 12, against the third-place Stingers (5-3-2) at the Ed Meagher Arena in a 3 p.m. start.
