Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Matthew McCarthey

Last-place Gee-Gees surprise No. 3 ranked hockey Martlets

OTTAWA -- Goaltender Maude Levesque-Ryan of Rimouski, Que., posted a 36-save shutout as the last-place Ottawa Gee-Gees stunned division-leading McGill, ranked No.3 in Canada, by a 2-0 score in RSEQ women's hockey at the Minto Sports Complex, Sunday. The win moved Ottawa (3-9-0) out of the cellar in the five-team conference and one point ahead of Carleton (2-9-1).

The result also snapped the Gee-Gees losing streak at four and halted McGill's win streak at three. Ottawa improved their lifetime record to 21-98-7 in 126-meetings with the Martlets.

McGill had a 34-28 edge in shots, including a 13-6 effort in the second period.

"I thought we played better today than yesterday (in a 5-1 win at Concordia)," said Martlet head coach Peter Smith "We scored five goals yesterday on our only scoring chances and today we had a dozen chances but couldn't find the back of the net. Some of the little details today hurt us. We didn't track down rebounds particularly well and we didn't have the same net presence that we've had in the last few games."

Ottawa forward Melodie Bouchard opened the scoring -- which proved to be the game-winner -- at 15:21 of the first period. Teammate Melina Roy netted an insurance goal on a power-play at 12:57 of the final stanza.

Ottawa was 1-for-4 with an extra attacker, while McGill was 0-for-4.

Martlets netminder Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., saved 26 of 28 shots through 58:10 as her record dropped to 9-3. Her Gee-Gees counterpart, Levesque-Ryan, improved to 3-6

"These games will make us better," vowed Smith. "We will have a good week in practice and be ready to go when we come back here to Ottawa next Saturday. "

McGill returns to the nation's capital next weekend for a rare overnight stay. The Martlets (9-3-0) will play the Carleton Ravens (2-9-1) at 7 p.m on Jan. 18, followed by the Gee-Gees (3-9-0) on Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
