SHERBROOKE, Que. --
Meggie Dargis of Trois-Rivières, Que., struck gold and led the McGill Martlets to a first-place finish of five teams at the Sherbrooke Open, Saturday.
It was the third career race victory -- her first of the season -- for Dargis, a 22-year-old management senior, who finished atop the podium in the 57-runner field. The 5-foot-2 distance runner completed the six-kilometre race in 22 minutes, 44 seconds. Teammate
Elizabeth Hirsch was two seconds back for a silver-medal finish. Carleton's
Jenna van Vliet claimed bronze in 23:32.
Other Martlets to finish in the scoring were
Celine Marks (23:41; 4th overall, 3rd among RSEQ runners),
Morgane Butler (23:44; 6th and 4th, respectively) and
Laura Carlton (23:54, 8th, 6th).
In the team scoring, McGill was first of five teams in the women's division with 16 points to win their second of three meets this season. They easily outdistanced second-place Sherbrooke (54). The Montreal Carabins placed third (82), followed by UQTR (106) and UQAC (139). Laval, which won their own invitational meet last week, did not participate.
On the men's side, Sherbrooke's
Malo Chefson finished first of 50 entries, completing the 8k circuit in 27:20. Joining him on the podium was Ottawa's
Andre Alie-Lamarche (27:20) and Sherbrooke teammate
Thomas Windisch (27:41).
McGill's best result was
Jeremy Obrand, a physiology sophomore from Montreal, who was sixth, crossing the line in 28:07. Rounding out the top five Redmen scorers was
Simon Bernier (28:22), a fifth-year physics senior from Chambly, Que., who ended up ninth overall and eighth in RSEQ scoring, followed by sophomore
Thomas Csisztu (29:21, 13th, 11th) of Pembroke, Ont., sophomore
Hugo Schutzberg (29:50, 17th, 14th) of Cambridge, Mass., and
Jack Adams (29:51, 18th, 15th), a freshman from London, Ont.
Sherbrooke took the men's team title with 25 points, to finish ahead of Ottawa (41), McGill (54), UQAM (112), Montreal (119) and UQTR (143).
Next on the McGill schedule is the Capital Challenge on Oct. 13 in Ottawa, followed by the RSEQ championship on Oct. 27 at Parc de Maisonneuve in Montreal.
