FREDERICTON, NB --
Stephanie Desjardins of Grand Falls, N.B., played a starring role in a return to her home province, tallying twice as visiting McGill blanked the St. Thomas University Tommies 2-0 at the Grant Harvey Centre, Saturday.
The result avenged a Martlets loss to STU at the 2016 national championship in their only previous meeting, a 2-1 setback in the consolation round in Calgary on March 18, 2016. In fact, that defeat was also McGill's first-ever loss to a team from the Atlantic conference, snapping what had been a perfect 13-0 record against AUS teams at the national tourney. That record now stands at 15-1 after sweeping Moncton and St. Thomas over the weekend.
The goaltending tandem of starter
Rachelle Champion and
Amanda Hadwen shared the shutout. Champion, a junior from East York, Ont., collected the win, saving all 13 shots faced in 30 minutes and 45 seconds of playing time. Hadwen, a sophomore from Ottawa, mopped up in relief and was called upon to make just three saves.
Desjardins, a physical education sophomore who scored just four goals in her freshman campaign, snapped a scoreless tie at the 6:50 mark of the middle stanza, assisted by
Samantha McCluskey and
Christiana Colizza. She then added an insurance marker at 2:39 of the final period, converting passes from
Lauren Bowman and
Cassidy Bell.
McGill will put their modest two-game win streak on the line when they host their first-ever Old Four Tournament, Sept. 22-23, at McConnell Arena. Queen's plays Western at 1 p.m., while the Martlets are slated to confront Toronto on Saturday at 5 p.m. The two losing teams will meet in a consolation game on Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by the two winning sides meeting in the tourney finale at 1 p.m.
