LAVAL, Que --
Stuart Earle of Woodsmans Point, N.B., tied a school record, shooting 68 to lead the McGill men's golf team in cold, wet and windy conditions, Monday, at the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec university championships. The three-day tournament was hosted by McGill at their home course, the Islesmere Golf Club.
Laval shot a combined four-over-par 876 to capture the RSEQ men's team title for the 17th consecutive year, while the Rouge et Or women's program claimed their third straight banner. Both Laval sides posted a perfect season, sweeping all nine rounds over three tourneys. The men were led by
Baptiste Mory, a native of France, who erased a four-stroke deficit in the final round to win the individual championship with rounds of 73, 69 and 72 Mory completed an unblemished nine-round sweep on the season for the first time in RSEQ history. He was named as RSEQ male golfer of the year, meriting a berth on the all-conference team.
The Montreal Carabins finished second in the 10-team men's field with a 14-over 906, four strokes ahead of third-place McGill.
Earle, a 20-year-old mechanical engineering junior, tied his own school record low, matching the 68 he shot as a freshman on Sept. 11, 2016 at Le Victorien golf club in Mirabel. Combined with 72 and 74 over the first two rounds, Earle finished tied for fourth in the men's individual championship with a combined one-over-par 219, for an average of 73 in the tourney. He made the RSEQ second all-star squad.
His performance helped the Redmen come from behind to pull off an unexpected fourth-place finish in the final standings of the 10-team Quebec conference to qualify for the Golf Canada national collegiate championships next May, along with Laval, Montreal and Bishop's. The best four men's and top two women's teams in the Quebec conference earn trips to the Nationals. This marks the first time since the 2012-13 season -- the sixth time in school history -- that the Redmen have qualified.
"Qualifying for nationals was always in our mind and first on our list of goals," said
Antoine St-Jean, in his second year as head coach at McGill and a current pro at Golf Fontainebleu. "I knew that hosting this year would give us a little advantage because we were able to play the course often and plan a better strategy for each player. The difficulty of the course was the greens, so playing it often was beneficial for us. After the the first two rounds, we knew where we stood. With the forecast for rainy, windy cold weather, we strategized to play a different golf ball, a harder ball that travels further and with less spin because of the conditions and I believe this strategy paid off.
"I know the guys gave their best this week to make it and they delivered. Nobody gave up even after a difficult start from
Dillon Cooper, who came back with great score and that made a big difference along with the 68 from
Stuart Earle. That was huge. We talked about needing a good performance during dinner on Monday night and again on Tuesday morning. We said that today was the time for him to make a statement and he did. I felt it during the round and all the other players knew he was playing great and that carried the team to play smart, to not make mistakes. I'm really proud of the team today. Despite the (miserable) conditions, they didn't stop charging."
Cooper, a junior from Vancouver, B.C., shot an 88 in the opening day, then followed up with rounds of 75 and 73 to finish tied for 29th with a combined 236. Other leading Redmen in the scoring were
Samir Ladak (T17th, 231) of Richmond, B.C., sophomore
William Comeau (T20th, 232) of Salaberry de Valleyfield, Que., and
Colton Ryan (T39th, 243), a sophomore from Gatineau.
On the women's side, McGill's top golfer was
Rene Cheng, a management junior from Coquitlam, B.C., who finished ninth overall with a combined score of 253 to earn RSEQ second-team all-star honours. She shot rounds of 89, 83 and 81. Other McGill teammates in the scoring were: junior
Nicole Tieman (15th, 271) of Montreal, senior
June Gleed (18th, 281) of Newmarket, Ont., and
Alicia Essig (24th, 307), a freshman from Winnipeg.
Laval's
Florence Leduc claimed the women's individual title with rounds of 81, 76 and 76 for a 17-over total of 233 in a field of 27 entries. She was named RSEQ female golfer of the year and merited a berth on the first all-star squad.
Laval finished atop the five-team women's standings with a 27-over-par 729, qualifying for the national championships along with the second-place Carabins (738). McGill and UQTR, tied for third in the tourney with an identical score of 805. Concordia was fifth at 826. In the final season standings, after nine rounds, the Martlets finished third overall, one berth shy of a trip to Nationals.
