Yale battles Martlets to draw in matchup of Ivy league pucksters


NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Jade Downie-Landry from St. Jean, Que., registered two goals as McGill battled Yale University to a 4-4 overtime draw in women's preseason hockey at Ingalls Rink, Saturday.
 
It was the second straight year that Yale had failed to defeat McGill, which owns an 11-6-3 lifetime record against the Bulldogs.
 
After a scoreless first period, Landry, a 5-foot-9 psychology junior, struck on the power-play at 11:12 of the second period. Her next goal, at 8:50 of the third, tied the game up 3-3. Landry has now registered a 4-3-7 record in eight preseason contests.
 
Martlet senior Shana Walker, of North York, Ont., gave McGill a 2-0 lead at 11:43 of the second but Yale tallied three consecutive times to take the lead. Claire Dalton netted a shorthanded effort at 15:02 of the second, followed in the third period by Charlotte Welch and Emma Vlasic , at 0:20 and 7:30, respectively.

Stephanie Desjardins of Grand Falls, N.B., then put McGill ahead 4-3 at 9:57 but Yale forced a five-minute overtime session when when Rebecca Vanstone, connected at 14:46. There was no scoring in the overtime and the NCAA do not use a shootout.
 
McGill held a 32-31 edge in shots and won 29 of 56 faceoffs. They went 1-for-4 on the power play and killed four of five infractions taken.
 
Goaltender Gianna Meloni turned aside 28 of 42 shots and was the goalie of record for Yale.

The Martlets rotated in two of their three netminders with Amanda Hadwen, a sophomore from Ottawa, Ont., meriting the start and saving all 16 shots faced in 30:09. In her two preseason appearances, the 5-foot-7 science major turned aside all 19 shots faced.

Rachelle Champion, a nursing sophomore from East York, Ont., played the remaining 34:51 and was credited with the tie. She conceded four goals on 14 shots.

McGill continues its Ivy League NCAA tour with a game against Dartmouth at 2 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 14).
