Gee-Gees get best of late-arriving hockey Martlets

MONTREAL -- Cassidy Herman had a goal and an assist as Ottawa quadrupled McGill 4-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena on Friday.

The result snapped Ottawa's losing streak at five and halted the Martlets' win streak at four. The Gee-Gees improved their record to 20-96-7 in 123 lifetime meetings with McGill, but the victory may have come at a steep cost as team-leading scorer Mélodie Bouchard, who has seven goals and six assists on the season, was injured in a collision behind the net with just 2:10 left to play. After a five-minute delay, she managed to skate off the ice but did not move her feet as she was helped off by two teammates.

The Martlets outshot their guests 34-26 thanks largely to a 15-6 effort in the third period.

"The game started at seven o'clock and I thought we started playing at about 20 after eight, and it was too late," said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "We played 20 minutes of good hockey, that was in the third period. The first 40 minutes I thought Ottawa was significantly better than we were. They beat us to every puck and they won most of the battles. You're not going to be beat somebody in our conference playing that way. We need to be better and we will be."

Herman set up Roxanne Rioux's goal at 10:29 of the first period, then scored a power-play insurance marker at 3:22 of the third, making it 3-0.
Taylor McGaughey netted Ottawa's second -- which proved to be the game-winner -- at 4:08 of the middle frame, assisted by her twin sister Meagan McGaughey.

Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., got the Martlets on the board to make it 3-1 at 9:52 of the third, assisted by Emilia Cotter of Toronto. Sara Lachance closed out the Gee-Gees win with an empty-netter at 19:19.

Ottawa was 1-for-3 on the power play and in a rarity for college hockey, didn't take any penalties.

McGill netminder Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., saved 22 of 25 shots through 58:42 as her record dropped to 6-7. Her Gee-Gees counterpart, Maude Levesque-Ryan, turned away 33 of 34 chances and improved to 8-7.

The Martlets (7-6-2) next visit Carleton (3-13-0) on Sunday (Jan. 28), while Ottawa (8-6-2) hosts Concordia (10-3-1) that same afternoon.
