Olympic wrestler Yeats shines in debut with rugby Martlets

MONTREAL -- Bailey Dean scored 13 points as Carleton defeated McGill 33-21 in RSEQ women's rugby, Saturday, at Percival Molson Stadium. Dean earned her points with one try and four conversions.

Ten of McGill's 21 points came on a pair of tries by Dori Yeats, an elite national team wrestler who was making her season debut with the rugby squad. Yeats, a civil engineering sophomore, had never competed for a McGill sports team as the University no longer has a wrestling team. The 24-year-old represented Canada at the Rio 2016 Olympics and won gold at both the 2015 Pan American Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"Having Yeats was definitely a positive," first-year McGill head coach Magali Harvey, the star-studded Canadian national team player who was hired to guide the Martlets program just weeks before the season began. "She's a great athlete that brought a lot to today's game. It will be exciting to see how she does once she gets more game sense."

The 21 points scored and 33 points allowed both marked season bests for the Martlets, in the midst of a rebuilding program in a tough and highly competitive Quebec conference.

"The game in itself was a real positive (step for our program)," said Harvey. "It's the best game we have played this season, not because the score was closer but because it's the first time the girls "backed" themselves while playing rugby. Our attack was faster and much better in terms of decision-making. The defence wasn't perfect but it's also getting there."

The Ravens had a 12-0 advantage at halftime and jumped to a 26-0 lead before McGill responded with three straight tries. Yeats put the Martlets on the board in the 53rd minute. Emily Challice of Peterborough, Ont., added another try in the 58th minute and Yeats scored her second in the 71st. All three tries were successfully converted by fullback Dana Silerova of Terrasse-Vaudreuil, Que., who was named Game MVP for McGill.

Sarah Jane Vezina had the opening two tries for Carleton and merited her team's MVP honours. Teammates Maya Addai and Sonia Hassan-Legault added singles.

McGill (0-5) next hosts Bishop's (0-5) on Friday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at Percival Molson Stadium. The Ravens (4-1) play Laval (5-0) on Saturday, Oct. 7.
