Oops she did it again... Jade golden as McGill upends Queen's to take tourney

NAPANEE, Ont. -- Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., scored twice and added an assist as McGill defeated the Gaels 5-3 to capture the Queen's Invitational preseason women's hockey tournament at the Strathcona Paper Centre on Saturday.

McGill, which doubled Western 4-2 on Friday, was the only team out of four to go undefeated in the two-game tourney.

"Lots of good things happened this weekend," said Martlets head coach Peter Smith. "I told the team afterwards that it was a good weekend for us in terms of our development. We'll stick at it and keep going. We got a good game from everyone and our first-year players are really coming along. Geez, they work hard... to figure it out, so I'm really pleased with (their progression)."

Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-8 forward, scored four of McGill's nine goals over the weekend. The 21-year-old psychology sophomore wasted no time getting started against Queen's, putting the Martlets on the board just 19 seconds after the opening face-off. She added another midway through the period, at 9:30, then assisted on the winning tally by Marika Labrecque at 13:48 of the final period. It was the first-career marker for Labrecque, a 5-foot-5 freshman forward from Lac Etchemin, Que.

"Jade had a very prolific weekend, that's for sure," said Smith of his star sniper who now has six goals and two assists in five preseason contests. "She played very well and did a nice job, certainly. I was happy for her. I'm always happy for all of them, but as I said after the last game, Jade's worked hard. It's always really rewarding to see a player who's worked hard reap the benefits."

With the Martlets leading 2-0, Hailey Wilson responded for Queen's with a power-play marker at 17:01 of the first stanza, and teammate Katrina Manoukarakis evened things up with a power-play goal of her own at 2:03 of the second.

But Emilia Cotter of Toronto restored the Martlets' lead with yet another power-play goal at 9:06 of the middle frame. It marked the first career tally for Cotter, a defenceman in her third season at McGill.

"She was pretty excited -- she did the 'Foligno leap' goal celebration when she scored that one," Smith laughed. "I'm real happy for her. We've worked hard on getting the D involved in the attack and getting shots from the offensive blue line. They did a good job on that this weekend so we're getting there."

Queen's tied it up again on a goal by Caroline DeBruin at 13:44, sending the teams into the final period knotted at 3-3.

After Labrecque's game-winning exploits midway through the period, Olivia Atkinson of Oakville, Ont., closed out the scoring with an empty-netter with 21 seconds left in the game.

"Having four different scorers was a big part of our success," noted Smith. "If we can get scoring from a variety of sources it's just going to make us that much better."

The game featured the rare sight of five goaltenders getting into the action. Rachelle Champion of East York, Ont., started in goal for McGill and made 12 saves on 15 shots through two periods. Rookie Amanda Hadwen of Ottawa earned her first career win after turning away all 12 shots faced in the third period.

Claire Warren, Stephanie Pascal and Makenzy Arsenault split time in net for the Gaels. Warren allowed two goals on seven shots in the first period, Pascal stopped eight of nine in the second and Arsenault took the loss after turning away six of seven shots during the third period but allowing the game-winner.

The Martlets were 1-for-3 on the power play but conceded a pair of PP goals on five penalty kills.

McGill, which improved to 3-1, travels to Vermont on Friday, Sept. 29 to begin their first of two extended NCAA pre-season tours. Queen's takes on the NCAA's Colgate on Oct. 1.
