Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Gryphons play Survivor role, outshot overwhelmingly but outlast, outplay Martlets

MONTREAL— Goaltender Aurore Beaulieu made 36 saves leading the No. 8 ranked Guelph Gryphons to a 5-3 victory over McGill on the final day of the 50th annual Theresa Humes women's hockey tournament at Ed Meagher Arena, Sunday.

The Gryphons, who were badly outshot 39-23, overcame that hurdle to lead 2-1 after the opening period and 4-2 after two. Both teams tallied once in the final frame.

McGill appeared to lose focus, conceding early goals in each period on four of Guelph's five markers – in each case before the stanza was four minutes old.

Kelly Gribbons put the Gryphons up 1-0 at 3:11 of the first period. Ashlee Lawrence extended the lead to 3-1 at 1:51 of the middle frame, followed less than two minutes later by Kaitlin Lowy, who upped the count to 4-2 at 3:49 and then Sydney Davidson added an insurance marker at 2:52 of the third.

Guelph's other goal, scored by Karli Shell, had given them a 2-1 lead at 9:05 of the second period.

Nicole Howlett tallied twice for McGill, reducing the deficit to 3-2 (in the second) and 4-3 (in the final period). Teammate Jade Downie-Landry netted the other marker, evening the count at 1-1 in the first period.

Both teams failed to score on the power play, with McGill going 0-for-4 and Guelph finishing 0-for-3.

Martlets rookie netminder Amanda Hadwen, making her second start in as many days, conceded five goals on 23 shots and took her first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1 overall.

McGill, which fell to 9-14 overall and 7-8 against U SPORTS teams, will resume regular season play with a pair of home games after the New Year. The Martlets, who are 3-4-2 in RSEQ league play, will host Concordia (6-3-0) on Jan.6, followed by Ottawa (6-2-1) on Jan. 7. Both contests are slated for a 3 p.m. puck drop a McConnell Arena.
