OTTAWA --
Katelyn Steele made 35 saves in the Ravens net as Carleton rallied to defeat No.7 McGill 3-1 in RSEQ women's hockey, Friday, at CU Ice House.
It was just the fourth win for Carleton in 95 lifetime matches with the Martlets, who own a 90-4-1 head-to-head record.
"We can't score, and it's frustrating," said McGill bench boss
Peter Smith, whose winless squad -- which has tallied a league-low five goals in four games -- outshot the Ravens 36-21. "We do good things but there are things we need to do better. We need to create more second-chance opportunities. We had a few breakdowns but overall there were lots of good things that happened… but we still need to be better. And we will... keep working at it."
Steele, a 5-foot-7 senior goaltender, improved her record to 3-2 on the season with a 1.89 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage.
Cassidy Bell of Baldonnel, B.C., opened the scoring for McGill at 2:37 of the second period. It marked the first career regular-season tally for the sophomore defenceman, who has two goals in 51 games overall, including exhibition play.
Kate Devries of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., and
Lea Dumais of Beaconsfield, Que., were credited with assists on the play.
Jenna Mitchell knotted things up at 7:55, and teammate
Shannon Pearson put the Ravens ahead 2-1 at 15:03 of the frame.
Martlets netminder
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., saved 18 of 20 shots through 59:04 as her record dropped to 0-4 with a 2.55 GAA and a .913 save percentage. The 5-foot-8 sophomore was pulled for the extra attacker with over a minute to go, but
Katia Boulianne intercepted an errant pass from the blueline and her long shot from the neutral zone found the empty net at 18:53 to snuff out any chance of a McGill comeback.
Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill, with McGill going 0-for-5 on the power-play and the Ravens 0-for-4.
Despite going scoreless, Smith indicated that his troops looked good with the man-advantage.
"Today was probably our best game on the power-play in that we had a real good shot mentality," he explained. "We got a lot of pucks through, we just couldn't get a puck in the net. Sometimes our power-play is 'pitch and catch', up top with the puck (instead of taking shots) but that wasn't the case today. We had good movement, shot the puck and did a lot of real good things. We just seem to be a bit snake-bitten. But I don't believe in luck: you make your own breaks, so we've just got to work harder."
The Martlets (0-4) host division-leading Concordia (4-1) on Sunday (Nov. 12) at 3 p.m. at McConnell Arena. The Stingers won the first meeting 3-1 at Concordia on Oct. 21.
Carleton (3-2) has a week off before rematching with McGill at McConnell on Saturday, Nov. 18.
