MONTREAL --
Alexandra Boulanger scored both goals as the Montreal Carabins edged fifth-ranked McGill 2-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena on Friday.
The Carabins outshot the Martlets 36-22 as they improved their lifetime record against McGill to 19-43 in 62 confrontations overall.
"I told the team afterwards that I thought we competed hard and did a lot of real good things in the game tonight," said
Peter Smith, who was coaching in his 699th career game behind the McGill bench "We just couldn't seem to get the puck in the back of the net and that's something that we'll have to keep working on. We created scoring chances but need to score some goals -- you're not going to win a lot of games in our league scoring one goal. But it's real encouraging and it's a big step forward (from last week's season-opening 3-1 loss to Concordia). We have a hard-working group and we're going to get better."
Boulanger opened the scoring at 3:28 of the middle frame after a scoreless first period, assisted by
Jade Vix.
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., tallied a power-play marker for the Martlets to tie things up at 12:45, assisted by
Olivia Atkinson of Oakville, Ont., but the duo of Boulanger and Vix struck again at 7:18 of the third with what proved to be the winning tally.
McGill pulled goaltender
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., with 2:04 to go and seemed poised for a late comeback when Vix took a penalty with a minute left, allowing the Martlets a 6-on-4 advantage that Montreal managed to smother.
Deguire, a 5-foot-7 sophomore, made 34 saves as her record dropped to 0-2.
Maude Trevisan had 21 stops for the Carabins and improved to 1-1.
McGill was 1-for-3 on the power play while the Carabins went 0-for-2.
The Martlets (0-2-0) visit Ottawa (1-0-1) on Sunday (Oct. 29) at 2 p.m. in a game that will be streamed live on
OUAtv. Montreal (2-0-1) takes on Concordia (2-1-0) that same afternoon.
