FREDERICTON, NB --
Henry Dennis of Scarborough, Ont., tossed a complete game one-hit shutout as McGill skunked Acadia 15-0 on Day 2 of the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association national championship at Royals Field, early Friday morning. The Redmen, who improved to 2-0 in the tourney, have now won 25 consecutive regular season and playoff games, including three from last year when they won their third straight national title.
McGill, which outhit the Axemen 7-1, scored five runs in the first inning, four in the second and six more in the third before the game was halted after the fourth inning due to the "mercy" rule. Acadia dug their own grave by walking nine, hitting two batters and committing three errors.
Dennis, a six-foot, 170-pound right-hander who throws side-armed, struck out three and walked the bases loaded in the second inning but induced a ground-out on an 0-2 pitch to get out of that jam.
"We arrived at the ballpark (at about 8:30 a.m.) and while the team was taking batting practice, I took time to have some coffee and make sure that I was awake," said the 21-year-old history junior who threw 62 pitches, 35 of them for strikes. "My fastball was good today. it's usually my go-to pitch when I need it the most. We've played (lopsided) games like this before and I think we do a good job of staying level-headed. We focus a lot on what we do well and less about the opposition (in games like this). Between games, there's a lot of talk about what works for us to help us win and not so much about what the other team did. That helps keep us grounded... There's always stuff to work on and if we play within ourselves, we're going to have a good game."
The lone Acadia player to solve Dennis was
Dylan McCarthy, who had a one-out single in the third inning but was stranded on first base.
Second baseman
Domenic Defelice, who was ninth in the Redmen batting order, was named as player of the game. The economics sophomore from Richmond, Mass., was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a double. No other player had a multi-hit performance.
First baseman
Emerson Dohm, a junior from West Vancouver, B.C., reached base a game-high three times and scored on each occasion. He was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and an RBI.
McGill will close out the round-robin portion of the tourney against UNB on Saturday at 12 noon (Eastern).
