Emerson Dohm had a pair of hits, collected three RBIs and scored a run as McGill coasted to a 12-4 victory over Carleton 12-4 on Saturday to sweep a doubleheader and capture the Northern Division championship of the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau Park.
The Redmen, who won the earlier game 8-3, improved to 31-5-1 overall, including an unblemished 16-0 record in league play and a 4-0 post-season mark. Combined with three victories from the Nationals last year, McGill brings a 23-game win streak in CCBA play to Royals Field in Fredericton, N.B., Oct. 19-22, where they will be gunning for an unprecedented fourth consecutive national championship.
They will be joined by Carleton (division finalists; 10-6 reg. season), Concordia (wildcard berth; 9-7), Dalhousie (Atlantic Conference champs; 8-8), Acadia (Atlantic finalists; 5-11), plus UNB (7-9), which qualified as host team.
McGill, which outhit Carleton 11-6 in Sunday's twinbill nightcap, snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the third inning, then added four in the fourth and three more in the sixth.
Dohm, a 21-year-old history junior from West Vancouver, B.C., went 2-for-4 at the plate. He sparked the three-run third which with a two-RBI single on a 1-1 count, then added another RBI single in the fourth inning. In four post-season games, the 5-foot-11, 177-pound first baseman had four hits in 13 at bats, with a walk, eight RBIs and three runs scored.
Dohm,
Andre Lagarde,
Troy Shepherd and
Sasha Lagarde each had multiple hits for McGill, which didn't commit a single error in the field.
Starting pitcher
Henry Dennis collected the win. He allowed three runs on six hits and a pair of walks over five innings, striking out four.
Sam Greene and
Andre Lagarde each pitched one inning of hitless relief out of the bullpen to close out the game.
Braden McGinnis started for Carleton but lasted only 2.1 innings, allowing three hits, two walks and five runs while striking out one.
Troy Clarke, the second of five Ravens pitchers to see action, took the loss for Carleton. He went one inning, allowing four runs on six hits and walking one.
Carleton only mustered six hits led by
Manny Restrepo, who went 3-for-4 at the plate.
