Dohm delivers, makes Saad happy as Redmen draw first blood in CCBA divisional final


COTE ST. LUC, Que -- Emerson Dohm of West Vancouver, B.C., drove home four runs as the McGill drew first blood with an 8-3 victory over visiting Carleton, Saturday, to take a 1-0 lead in in the best-of-three Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association North Division final series. The Redmen can wrap up their fourth consecutive pennant with a sweep in the doubleheader nightcap, slated to resume today at 3 p.m. at Gary Carter Field in Trudeau Park.
 
The McGill offence, which had a season-low six hits, also benefited from eight walks and one hit batsman. The first eight hitters in the McGill batting order each drew a base on balls.

Dohm, a 5-foot-11, 177-pound first baseman who was batting sixth in the order, ignited a four-run rally in the bottom of the first with a three-run double, on an 0-1 count. The 21-year-old economics junior then came around to score on Camden Lawhead's hard ground ball single to centre.

Redmen starter Phil Saad of Lorraine, Que., struck out 11 batters and scattered five hits and did not walk one batter for a complete game victory on the pitcher's mound for McGill. Ahead 6-0 after two innings, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound right-hander weathered a scare in the third when the Ravens pushed across three runs, the only inning when they crossed home plate. he threw 105 pitches, 75 for strikes.

Jonathan Duforest, a physical education sophomore from Kirkland, Que., led McGill in hits with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

Starter Brady Turner took the loss for Carleton. He lasted two innings, allowing six runs (four earned) with four hits and four walks. he also hit one batter and was charged with two wild pitches. The Ravens big bats were led by Jordan Harcourt and Ryan Burnside, who each had RBIs in the third inning.

McGill can wrap up the divisional title later today with a win in the night-cap when Henry Dennis goes to the mound against Carleton's Braden McGinnins.
