OTTAWA -- Netminder
Émilie Bouchard made 36 saves as Ottawa upset sixth-ranked McGill 3-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at the Minto Sports Complex on Sunday.
The loss put an end to McGill's seven-game win streak in league play and nine-game streak overall and dropped the Martlets' all-time record to 92-16-7 in 115 meetings with the Gee-Gees.
"They capitalized on their opportunities and we didn't," said Martlets head coach
Peter Smith. "In terms of volume, we had 113 attempted shots -- anytime you get over 90 attempts you're in pretty good shape. Their goaltender played well and they blocked a lot of shots. They were probably a little bit hungrier than we were at times, but it was one of those games where we just couldn't get the puck in the back of the net."
Bouchard was kept busy in the Gee-Gees goal as McGill outshot the host team 37-22. The fifth-year transfer, who played four years at Université de Moncton, improved her record to 3-0.
"It's better to have a game like that now than later," Smith offered. "It'll keep our attention going and keep us working hard, and I'm okay with that."
Melodie Daoust, a fifth-year centre from Valleyfield, Que., opened the scoring 4:39 into the game, but it would prove to be McGill's only goal of the contest.
Olivia Atkinson, a sophomore from Oakville, Ont., and
Marie-Philip Lavoie, a junior from Pohenemagook, Que., were credited with the assists.
Marimée Godbout-Parent replied for Ottawa just 48 seconds later, assisted by
Roxanne Rioux, and the teams entered the first intermission tied at 1-1.
Reigning RSEQ rookie of the year
Mélodie Bouchard gave the Gee-Gees the lead at 3:40 of the second, with help from Rioux and
Violaine Houle. The goal maintained Bouchard's (8-13-21) four-point lead over Daoust (5-12-17) in the conference scoring race, with two more games played.
Alexe Drouin set up
Cindy Laurin on the insurance marker at 6:05 of the third.
Martlets goaltender
Tricia Deguire, a 5-foot-7 rookie from Sherbrooke, Que., turned away 19 of 22 pucks as her record fell to 9-3.
Both teams were powerless on the power-play, with McGill committing two infractions to the Gee-Gees' three.
Ottawa (7-4-1) next faces Carleton (3-8-1) on Jan. 13. The Martlets (9-3-0) have a week off before a rematch with the Gee-Gees at McConnell Arena, on Jan. 15 at 3 p.m.
MARTLET MURMURS: The Martlets were without the services of
Jade Downie-Landry who was overseas playing for Canada at the Nations Cup tournament in Füssen, Germany and Telfs, Austria, Jan. 4-7... The 21-year-old psychology freshman from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., joins former Western rearguard
Katelyn Gosling of London, Ont., as the only two Canadian university produced players from U Sports on the national women's development team.
