CANTON, N.Y. -- Rookie goaltender
Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., made 34 saves to earn her first career shutout as McGill blanked the NCAA's St. Lawrence University 3-0 in women's hockey, Saturday, at Appleton Arena.
It was the first Martlet win in five preseason tries this month but their fourth in the past five meetings with the Saints. It also marked the first McGill whitewash over the Saints since the series between these teams started in 2001. The Martlets owns a 5-10-1 lifetime record.
Jade Downie-Landry of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., tallied the game-winner, jamming in a power-play goal to open the scoring with 49 seconds left in the middle stanza. It marked the second career goal in a Martlets jersey for Downie-Landry, a psychology freshman and member of Canada's national women's development team.
The Saints held a 34-18 advantage in shots, including a 20-9 edge in the final frame, but Deguire stymied the Saints, time and time again.
"We got off to a slow start and ran into penalty trouble early," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. "We got through that and really picked up the pace in the second half of the game. I liked how hard we played. We probably gave up too many shots against but Tricia was terrific in nets for us. She played with a lot of confidence."
Olivia Atkinson of Toronto aded an insurance goal at 6:54 of the third period to give McGill a 2-0 lead, and captain
Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., hit the empty net with 20 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
St. Lawrence rotated three goalies in the game, with
Brooke Wolejko stopping all five shots faced in the first,
Grace Harrison allowing one goal on four shots in the second, to take the loss.
Sonjia Shelley played the final stanza and turned away seven of eight pucks before being pulled for the extra attacker.
McGill was 1-for-4 on the power play and killed all six penalties taken.
The Martlets, who hold a 1-4-0 record in exhibition play, continue their preseason in Burlington against the Vermont Catamounts on Sunday (Sept. 25) before returning home to host both Moncton and Toronto in the Martlet Invitational fall tournament, Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at McConnell Arena.
MARTLET MURMURS: McGill has won their last three confrontations against NCAA squads -- including two straight shutouts -- with 4-0 and 4-1 victories, respectively, over RPI (N-22-15) and Yale (O-18-15).
