MONTREAL -- Four student-athletes from McGill University received bursaries at a cocktail reception hosted by the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence, Wednesday, at La Brasserie Molson Coors. A combined total of $184,000 was handed out from the sponsorship program to 55 student-athletes, including 25 from the university ranks, 20 from CEGEP programs and 10 from the high school level.
The McGill quartet included distance runner
Jeremy Briand, a physics freshman and incoming volleyball freshman
Claire Vercheval, both natives of St. Julie, Que. Rounding out the group are Canadian national team fencers
Maximilien Van Haaster from Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Que., and
Joseph Polossifakis of Laval, Que.
Briand and Van Haaster each received a $4,000 award sponsored by Cogeco Media. Vercheval, the daughter of former Montreal Alouette lineman Pierre Vercheval, merited the Cogeco Pat Burns Perseverance Award valued at $4,000. Polossifakis received a $2,000 Corus Media bursary.
"(We seek) to highlight the importance, renown reputation and impressive growth that the sponsorship program has experienced in recent years," said
Claude Chagnon, in his 15th year as president of the Foundation. "The latter enables both small and large companies as well as some of the Foundation's partners, to contribute financially to making a genuine difference in the lives of student-athletes in Quebec. Some have even been able to develop long-term professional relationships with the student-athletes they sponsor. Now more than ever, these companies and partners are united with the Foundation for the academic, athletic, and professional achievements of Quebec's student-athletes.
The following companies are participating in the sponsorship program: Hason Steel, Aquam, Atrium Innovations, Bell Media, Blue Bridge, Cogeco Media, Corus Media, Fondation Bruny Surin, Fondation des Gouverneurs de Québec, Fondation Gilles Chatel, Grenier aux emplois, Imagineo, Math Sport, and Samson Groupe Conseil.
