RSEQ WOMEN'S HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP (Game 2): Carabins claim Quebec crown, win battle but not the war

MONTREAL -- Team captain Melodie Daoust scored twice and Marie-Philip Lavoie forced overtime with a last-minute goal but third-ranked McGill could not overcome No.2-Montreal and fell 4-3 in the extra session at McConnell Arena, Saturday, as the Carabins swept the RSEQ best-of-three final in two straight games, to lift the Ed Enos Trophy.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE McGILL SPORTS NETWORK

Audrey Gariepy of Laval, Que., netted the series-winner on the power play at 8:25 of the sudden-death period, just 52 seconds after fifth-year defender Kelsie Moffatt was assessed a rare overtime double-minor, for bodychecking and unsportsmanlike conduct after slamming the door to the penalty box. Referee Melanie Bordeleaux added a 10-minute misconduct to Moffatt's tally after the game ended. McGill took 26 of the 32 penalty minutes doled out by the officials. They went 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Carabins capitalized on two of six chances.

It was Montreal's third conference banner in school history, including previous Cup victories in 2013 and 2014. McGill has claimed the other seven titles to round out the past decade. Both teams will advance to the CIS Final Eight national championship in Calgary, March 17-20, where U de M will benefit from preferential seeding as a league champion. The last time that Montreal won the Cup on McGill ice, the Martlets had the last laugh, capturing the 2014 CIS championship with a 4-3 double overtime victory against the Carabins in the gold medal match.

"I thought we were much better prepared for the game today than on Thursday," said Martlets bench boss Peter Smith, whose squad fell 5-2 in the series opener.  "Overall our team played well. I told the girls afterwards that I would've been a little nervous going to Calgary after Thursday but I thought we played the right way in the game today. Although we lost and that was a huge disappointment, it sets us up going into Nationals, so we'll take all the good things that we had today."

Daoust, a physical education senior from Valleyfield, Que., opened the scoring at 8:47 of the first period, assisted by M.P. Lavoie. Montreal responded with three goals through the second and third periods from Lore Beaudrit, Marion Allemoz and Maude Laramee, but Daoust brought McGill within one at 9:22 of the third, set up by Moffatt and senior Gabrielle Davidson.

McGill pulled goaltender Taylor Hough for the extra attacker with just 64 seconds remaining and it only took 16 ticks for Lavoie, originally from Pohenegamook, Que., to force overtime by burying the unassisted equalizer at 19:48.

The Martlets peppered Montreal netminder Marie-Pier Chabot with 38 pucks, and outshot their guests 38-26. Chabot, a native of Quebec City, stopped 35 of them and improved her playoff record to 4-0. Hough, at the other end of the ice, turned away 22 of 26 and fell to 2-2 in the current playoffs and 8-3 lifetime in post-season play.

"We had a lot of scoring chances that we couldn't bury," noted Smith. "In a way I thought that was the difference -- we had some chances and we didn't get it in the back of their net. We made a couple mistakes and as I've said before, if you make mistakes against that team, you're going to give something up."

It's been quite a wrestling match between McGill and Montreal this season. Excluding a 4-0 preseason loss to the Carabins, the bitter rivals have crossed paths seven times in league and playoff action, with six of those decided by one goal. Four needed overtime and three were decided in a shootout. The Martlets own a 38-17 lifetime record against Montreal but have dropped 16 of the last 27.

McGill will travel to Calgary on March 14 to prepare for the CIS championship. They finished second at last year's tournament and have won the national title four times: in 2014, 2011, 2009 and 2008. The Carabins captured their lone CIS crown in 2013.
