MONTREAL --
Lea Dumais of Beaconsfield, Que., scored the game-winner as sixth-ranked McGill tripled Concordia 3-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at Ed Meagher Arena on Friday.
The win boosted McGill's record to 78-38-3 in 119 meetings overall with the Stingers since women's hockey was formerly sanctioned with a national championship structure in 1997.
"Today's the kind of game that's going to make us better," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. "I didn't really like our defensive zone play in the first period but we sorted it out and then the second was a great one for us. We played mostly in their end, we had a lot of shots on goal and scoring attempts. We played fast... I thought we were real good in the second.
"In the third, they had a bit of a push and we reacted well to that," he continued. "It was a grind-it-out kind of period and we blocked a ton of shots. We played a little bit more in our own end than we would've liked, but I really like the grit and determination on this team, so overall I thought it was a real good performance."
Claudia Dubois opened the scoring for Concordia with a power-play marker at 5:49 of the first, assisted by
Caroll-Ann Gagné.
Jade Downie-Landry, a psychology freshman from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., tied the score for McGill at 5:25 of the second, with assists from
Olivia Atkinson and
Marie-Philip Lavoie.
Dumais, a management freshman, then gave the Martlets a 2-1 lead at 17:12 of the middle frame, after fellow rookie
Lauren Bowman fought to keep the puck in the zone. Downie-Landry -- who collected the assist on the play -- picked it up to the goalie's right and passed it cross-crease to Dumais, who netted a left-handed shot from the far post.
Lavoie, a physical education junior from Pohenegamook, Que., added an insurance marker at 4:03 of the third, set up by team captain
Melodie Daoust.
Martlets goaltender
Tricia Deguire, a 5-foot-7 rookie from Sherbrooke, Que., made her 21st consecutive start overall and registered 21 saves on 22 shots. The physical education freshman improved her record to 7-2-0. She continues to lead the league in wins, goals-against average (1.67) and save percentage (.938).
Concordia's
Katherine Purchase was beaten three times on 25 pucks fired her way as she dropped to 1-6-0.
McGill continued to struggle on the power-play -- going 0-for-4 -- and killed off four of five infractions. The Martlets PP is ranked third in the five-team Quebec conference and 12th in the nation at 15.8 per cent. Their PK unit is fifth in the league and 30th in the country with a 78.9 success rate.
"There were a lot of penalties," said Smith, whose troops took half of the 10 infractions called. "I really like our 5-on-5 game and would rather play 5-on-5 but sometimes that's the way it goes."
The Martlets (7-2-0) close out the fall semester with a visit to Ottawa (6-2-1) on Sunday (Dec. 4). The game will be streamed live on
OUA.TV at 2 p.m. Concordia (2-6-1) also plays at Carleton (2-7-1) the same afternoon.
