MONTREAL -- Marie-Philip Lavoie scored twice and Melodie Daoust hopped off an overseas flight just in time to register a pair of assists as sixth-ranked McGill quadrupled Ottawa 4-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday.

The result halted Ottawa's three-game win streak, snapped McGill's two-game losing streak and avenged a 4-1 loss to the Gee-Gees in their last meeting, on Oct. 29, improving the Martlets record to 91-15-7 in 113 lifetime match-ups with Ottawa.

"I liked our game today," said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "Of the five regular-season games we've played, it's really the first game where I thought we stuck with it from start to finish. The first period probably wasn't the best but in the past when we're down a goal, we kind of get away from it, and I thought we stuck with it today. We played with good structure and played fast. There was a good pace (out there), it was a very physical game and that didn't seem to bother us at all."

Shanie Deschatelets of Thurso, Que., opened the scoring for Ottawa on a power-play goalmouth scramble just 6:03 into the game before the Martlets roared back with four unanswered goals.

Lavoie, a physical education junior from Pohenegamook, Que., knotted the score at 1-1 at 17:12 of the second period, and gave McGill a comfortable three-goal cushion at 18:34 of the third. She also helped set up the eventual game-winner, a power-play marker by Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., just 25 seconds into the final frame.

Daoust, a 5-foot-6 centre from Valleyfield, Que., assisted on both of Lavoie's goals. The team captain and Olympic gold medalist spent the past week in Finland at the Four Nations Cup, where she helped Team Canada settle for a silver medal on Saturday (Nov. 5). She had less than an hour of sleep on her return flight, which landed at Trudeau airport in Dorval on Sunday, two hours prior to the Martlets-Ottawa game, and the 24-year-old physical education senior rushed to the rink, arriving just an hour before the opening faceoff.

"I checked the schedule before I left for Finland and I knew we were playing and I (decided that) I was going to make it," explained Daoust. "I told (Coach Smith) then that no matter what happened, I was going to be there on the ice."

It marks the second time in 11 months that Daoust has played for the Martlets on the same day after returning from an overseas flight. On Jan. 8, 2016, her flight landed at Dorval after she helped lead Canada to gold at the Nations Cup tourney in Germany, then hours later, collected four points as McGill skated to a 5-2 victory over Concordia.

"Obviously having No.17 back was good," said Smith of his All-Canadian forward. "She's such a great leader and brings lots of inspiration to the girls. There was no question of whether she would play or not-- she was dying to get back and would've been totally annoyed at me if I hadn't put her in the line-up. She's getting off a plane and jet-lagged, but she's still set to go. She's a real warrior."

"I had lots of energy," Daoust said. "I was just so happy to be there with my teammates and that's why I decided to play. I knew I was going to be able to bring the energy up for my team. It's just a matter of staying focused and knowing that you might be a little bit more tired, so doing shorter shifts and passing the puck more than usual."

Daoust scored once in Canada's four games at the tourney. The national team defeated Finland (3-0), Sweden (3-1) and the United States (3-2) before suffering a 5-3 loss to the USA in the gold medal game on Saturday.

"The Four Nations Cup was a great learning experience," she added. "Obviously it wasn't the ending that we wanted but I think we played really well on the Friday (in Canada's preliminary-round win over Team USA) and that was a step in the right direction. I was pretty happy with how I played overall. My preparation this past summer was training hard and I think that it paid off. I wouldn't change anything, I just wanted to be there and be the best I could be."

Olivia Atkinson of Oakville, Ont., scored the insurance goal against Ottawa, assisted by Lauren Bowman, with 4:23 remaining in the contest. Bowman, a civil engineering freshman from of Calgary, Alta., also earned a helper on Lavoie's final tally, to record her first two career points in 17 games overall in a McGill jersey.

Gee-Gees netminder Maude Levesque-Ryan of Rimouski, Que., was beaten four times on 37 shots and took the loss. McGill rookie Tricia Deguire of Sherbrooke, Que., turned away 31 of 32 pucks for the win and improved her record to 3-2-0.

The Martlets were 1-for-4 on the power play and killed off four of five penalties. McGill had to play with only 10 forwards for the second half of the game after sophomore Shana Walker received a minor and game misconduct for checking from behind at 7:40 of the middle period. The team is strapped up front with injuries to veterans Gabrielle Davidson and Cora Constantinou.

Only three points separate the penthouse to the basement in the five-team RSEQ conference. McGill (3-2-0) hosts Montreal (3-3-0) at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13 at McConnell Arena. Ottawa (3-1-1) next visits Carleton (2-3-0) on Nov. 14.
