Rocky Hroch struck out 10 batters in a complete game shutout as McGill opened the playoffs with a 5-0 shutout over the Université de Montréal in the first game of a doubleheader at Gary Carter Field, Saturday. The result gave McGill a 1-0 lead in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association's best-of-three Northern Division semifinal series.
Hroch, who threw 75 of 123 pitches for strikes, scattered four hits over seven innings. He walked five and hit one batter.
The Redmen took a first inning 1-0 lead on a wild pitch and never looked back. They added three runs in the third inning and one in the fourth.
Christopher Stanford led the Redmen offence with a pair of hits in three at bats and a run batted. Other RBIs went to
Sam Groleau and
Jonathan Duforest.
Montreal starter
Charlie Loignon was charged with the loss. In six innings of work, he allowed five runs, two of them earned, on five hits. He struck out six but walked four and hit one.
The two teams will tango again in Game 2 of the doubleheader, scheduled for 3 p.m. if a rubber match is needed, It is slated for Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Ahuntsic Park.
