COTE ST. LUC, Que. -- The Université de Montréal scored seven runs over the first three innings enroute to a surprising 12-5 upset over McGill to earn a doubleheader split on Saturday at Gary Carter Field. It was the first UdeM victory over the Redmen this year after a four-game sweep prior to the post-season. The result evened their CCBA Northern Division best-of-three semifinal series at 1-1.
Shawn Beaulieu sparked the victory with three runs batted in, going 2-for-4 at the plate, with a walk and a run scored. He was part of a four-man wrecking crew -- which included
Vincent Dion,
Francis Gendron and
Christian Gendron – that combined for six hits and eight RBIs.
Leading the Redmen offence was
Emerson Dohm, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, with a pair of doubles, one RBI and one run scored. Teammates
Sasha Lagarde and
Jonathan Duforest each added a pair of hits, including a solo home run by Lagarde in the third inning to get McGill on the scoreboard.
Montreal starter
Simon Brisebois went the distance to record the win. He allowed five runs and 10 hits over seven innings, walked three and struck out five.
McGill starter
Adriano Petrangelo had a rough day at the office and was charged with the loss. He allowed four hits and seven runs, three of them earned, in 1.1 innings, hitting two batters, walking two and striking out a pair.
The Redmen will bring a stellar 24-10 overall record into the do-or-die rubber match, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Ahuntsic Park.
