TORONTO --
Stefanie Pohlod of Calgary scored the deciding goal in a post-overtime shootout as No.2-ranked McGill nipped the York Lions 2-1 in CIS women's exhibition hockey at the Canlan Ice Sports arena, Monday.
It was McGill's 11th consecutive victory over York -- dating back to a 4-1 loss on Oct. 17, 1999 -- and improved their lifetime record to 12-1-1 against the Lions.
McGill outshot York 30-24 in a contest that featured no goals over the first two periods.
Martlet sniper
Gabrielle Davidson of pte. claire, Que., finally broke the ice with her ninth goal of the season at 7:31 of the third stanza, converting a nifty three-way passing play with linemates
Marie-Philip Lavoie and
Alexandria Serpico.
Less than three minutes later, however, York knotted the score at 1-1 when
Kristen Barbara struck paydirt, assisted by Samuel and Treadwell.
Davidson and Barbara also traded goals in the shootout before Pohlod found the right mix. The fifth-year chemical engineering senior made a hesitation move to freeze goaltender
Megan Lee, then fired a wrist shot between her glove and leg pad.
Lee was credited with 28 saves in a losing cause but was beaten twice on four penalty shots in the shootout.
"We had a lethargic start but looked real good in the second period and kind of had to grind it out in the third," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith, whose troops were playing on the road for the second straight day, while York was skating on fresh legs. "All in all, it was a good learning experience. We were playing on an Olympic-sized ice surface against a much bigger team with good goaltending -- I thought she played very well in their net."
Taylor Hough made 24 saves between the pipes for McGill, and kicked aside three of four in the post-overtime showdown. She improved to 7-4 overall.
Only three penalties were called in the contest. The Martlets were 0-for-2 on the power-play, while York was 0-for-1.
McGill improved to 17-10 overall, including 10-6 against CIS opponents and 6-3 in regular season play. The second-ranked Martlets will host Concordia (3-6-1) on Friday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m., followed by a much-anticipated confrontation against the No.3-ranked Montreal Carabins (6-3-1) on Sunday, Jan. 10, at 3 p.m. Both games will be at McConnell Arena.
The Lions, who dropped to 7-14 overall, returns to OUA conference play with a road game at No. 1-ranked Guelph on Jan. 9.
