Saints prayers answered with late three-goal rally to upend hockey Martlets

Box Score
CANTON, NY -- Sophomore Kennedy Marchment sparked a three-goal rally in the final period to  help the NCAA's St. Lawrence University Saints skate to a 4-2 exhibition win over McGill in women's hockey, Wednesday afternoon at Appleton Arena.

The Saints outshot McGill 34-26 but an unofficial count by the Martlets coaching staff had McGill ahead 33-29, including a 16-7 margin in the final stanza. The most telling stat, however, was SLU going 3-for-4 on the power play, while successfully erasing both McGill PP opportunities.

"I thought that we played a pretty solid game, I liked what I saw out there" said McGill head coach Peter Smith. "We played with good intensity against a good team. The three power-play goals hurt us but that's something that we can fix. Also, we haven't had much time to work on our power-play as we're in the midst of six games in 10 days."

Marie-Pier Lavoie, a sophomore from Montreal, had given the visiting Martlets a 2-1 lead at the 3:25 mark of the final period but Marchment scored once and added two assists over the final 10 minutes. Junior Brooke Webster added a goal and a helper of her own, while Saints captain Amanda Boulier scored the game-winning tally midway through the third.

Sophomore Brooke Wolejko got the start in net for the Saints and played the first period, allowing one goal on 10 shots. Freshmen 'keepers Grace Harrison and Sonjia Shelly followed in the second and third, respectively, combining for 15 saves and one goal against. Harrison did not allow a goal in her 20 minutes.

Brittany Smrke, a junior from Toronto, was credited with 30 saves in a losing cause between the pipes for the Martlets.

McGill had opened the scoring, a rare feat against NCAA clubs, which almost always strike paydirt first, in both men's and women's cross-border confrontations.

Cora Constantinou, a sophomore from Scarborough, sent a shot from the top of the left circle that ricocheted off a pair of Saints defenders in front before finding its way behind Wolejko at the 12:47 mark.

Kirsten Padalis evened the score at 8:23 of the middle frame with three seconds remaining on a St. Lawrence power play opportunity. Senior Kailee Heidersbach, who finished with two assists on the afternoon, played the puck across the crease to Padalis who stuffed it in on the short side to tie the game at 1-1.

After Lavoie gave McGill a 2-1 advantage in the final stanza, Marchment scored to pull the Saints even at 2-2 when she put in her own rebound in tight on Smrke at the 9:22 mark.

Boulier finally gave the Saints the lead for good just over two minutes later with the Saints on the power play. The Watertown, Conn. native took a pass from Marchment at the point, took a stride into the zone and unloaded a blast that rang off the post before falling behind Smrke to make it 3-2.

Webster added an insurance marker, and the Saints third power play tally of the day, with just over five minutes remaining for the eventual 4-2 margin. Hannah Miller fed the puck to Marchment at the bottom of the right circle and Marchment hit Webster in front of the crease on the far side for a backhand finish.

St. Lawrence (1-0-1) will host a non-conference contest against Northeastern this Saturday at 2 p.m. McGill (1-4-0) continues their tour of NCAA teams, with games at Clarkson and Vermont, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Both games are set for 2 p.m. starts.

MARTLET MURMURS: Senior Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., finally made her season debut after missing McGill's first four preseason games while training in Calgary with the national team. A 5-foot-7 centre who helped Canada win Olympic gold at the Sochi Games, she was kept off the scoresheet by the Saints but was +1 with a game-high seven shots on net. "It was good to have Melo back in the lineup," said Smith. "She was a dynamic force out there."
