Box Score KINGSTON, Ont -- A wild three-goal flurry early in the second period proved to be the difference as McGill skated to a 3-1 road victory over Queen's on Day 2 of the Gaels preseason women's hockey tournament at the Invista Centre, Saturday. It ended a scoring drought of 180 minutes and 42 seconds for the Martlets, giving them their first victory in three attempts against CIS opponents this season.
After a scoreless first period, the two teams charged out of the staring block in the middle stanza with three goals just 47 seconds apart.
McGill sophomore
Emily Davies started the scoring spree with the team's first goal of the season, a power-play marker at the 42-second mark. Gaels forward
Addi Halladay tied it at 1-1 only 13 seconds later but just 34 seconds after that, McGill took the lead for good when rookie
Shana Walker, a native of North York, Ont., received a pass from
Erika Pyke and struck paydirt at 1:29 with what proved to be the game-winner.
The Martlets put the game on ice with a third-period insurance marker on the power-play at 4:14 as
Marie-Philip Lavoie of
Pohenegamook, Que., scored after converting passes from defenceman
Brittney Fouracres and sniper
Gabrielle Davidson.
The Martlets had a slight 25-24 edge in shots but special teams was the most telling stat as McGill was 2-for-5 with the man-advantage, while erasing all seven penalty-killing situations.
Goalkeeper
Brittany Smrke, a junior from Oakville, Ont., merited the victory for McGill, turning aside 23 of 24 shots.
Stephanie Pascal, her counterpart at the other end of the ice, was saddled with the loss, conceding three goals on 25 shots.
McGill improved to 13-6-1 against the Gaels since the CIS women's hockey championship was initiated in 1997.
