Carabins get first laugh in whitewash over hockey Martlets but she who laughs last, laughs best

Box Score
KINGSTON, Ont -- It was billed as the "Battle of Montreal" but it was played 300 kilimetres away in Kingston and the Montreal Carabins drew first blood, blanking McGill 4-0 in women's preseason hockey at the Queen's Invitational tournament, Friday.  It sort of avenged Montreal's devastating loss to McGill in the RSEQ league championship series last spring

Combined with a 3-0 setback to Guelph in the preseason opener on Sept. 11, it marked the first time in 11 years that the Martlets had been shutout back-to-back against a CIS opponent. The last time that happened was on Oct. 9-10, 2004, when Laurier and Toronto both skated to identical 1-0 victories over McGill at the Waterloo Thanksgiving Invitational tournament.

No need to panic says McGill head coach Peter Smith, who was missing sniper Melodie Daoust, an Olympic gold medalist who is spending the weekend at a national team tarining camp in Calgary.

"I thought that we had the edge in the first and took the game to them in the second," said Smith. "We couldn't score but had some real good chances and also defended well. But in the third period, we were back on our heels, got stuck in our end a couple of times and seemed to lose a little confidence. The Carasbins were better than us in that period."

Montreal led 2-0 after the opening stanza on late goals by Audrey Gariepy (17:19) and Valerie St-Onge, whose power-play goal came just 18 seconds before the intermission. After a scoreless second, the Carabins struck for two more in the final period. Cassandra Dupuis struck for another power-play at 9:55 and Jessica Cormer rounded out the scoring at 14:31.

The Carabins held a 39-18 edge in shots. They went 2-for-4 on the power-play, while McGill was 0-for-3. Goaltender Marie-Pier Chabot made 18 saves for the shutout. McGill starter Brittany Smrke turned aside 35 of 39 shots in a losing cause.

McGill leads the all-time series against the Carabins with a 37-12-0 record since they first crossed paths in 2009 but Montreal has won 11 of the last 21.

The Martlets will face host Queen's on Saturday at 4 p.m. with live stats available online. McGill is 12-6-1 against the Gaels since the CIS women's hockey championship was initiated in 1997.
