Box Score MONTREAL – Senior goaltender
Stephanie Nehring of Oshawa, Ont., made 16 saves for a shutout as the visiting University of Guelph Gryphons surprised McGill 3-0 in a women's preseason hockey opener, at McConnell Arena, Friday.
The Martlets, who reached the CIS gold medal game last spring and lost five seniors to graduation, iced a lineup that was missing their top two forwards -- Olympic gold medalist
Melodie Daoust and high-scoring sniper
Gabrielle Davidson -- who did not dress for this exhibition. Guelph, which was ranked fifth in the final CIS Top 10 poll last year, had a 24-16 edge in shots. They went 1-for-3 on the power-play, while McGill was 0-for-4.
Scoring for the Gryphons was Toronto native
Kaitlin Lowy,
Marcie Landman of Drayton, Ont., and
Kelly Gribbons of Port Elgin, Ont. Lowry opened the scoring on the power play at 11:52 of the first period, converting passes from
Christine Grant and
Leigh Shilton.
The score remained 1-0 until the third period when Landman, a third-year forward, connected on a nice shot at 4:36, with Shilton picked up her second assist of the contest.
Gribbons put the game out of reach at 14:23 when she tallied an unassisted marker on her backhand to beat McGill goalie
Brittany Smrke, who saved 21 of 24 shots and took the loss.
Guelph will stay in Montreal overnight to face the Carabins on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Martlets, who were sporting spiffy new uniforms, wil head to Kingston next week for the Queen's invitational tournament. They open against against their archrival Montreal Carabins on Friday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m., followed by games against Queen's (Sept. 19 at 7:30 pm) and UBC (Sept. 20 at 12 noon).
MARTLET MURMURS: McGill, which was ranked at No.1 or 2 all season last year, has lost five seniors to graduation, including high-scoring forwards
Katia Clement-Heydra and
Leslie Oles, along with defencemen
Michelle Daigneault and Adrienne Crampton, in addition to forward
Logan MurraySEE COMPLETE BOXSCORESCORING SUMMARY
