Box Score MONTREAL --
Audrey Gariepy netted a hat-trick as the No.2-ranked Montreal Carabins skated to a 5-1 victory over top-ranked McGill at CEPSUM Arena, Saturday, to even the RSEQ best of three final series at 1-1.
The deciding Game 3 for the Dr. Ed Enos Trophy will be played at McConnell Arena on Sunday at 3 p.m.
McGill, which led the nation in shots per game (40.4) and ranked second in goals (4.25), had a 28-21 edge in shots but struggled defensively.
An intense affair, the contest featured a whopping 40 penalty minutes -- quite unusual for women's hockey -- and McGill took 24 of them, their highest total this season in 37 games overall. The Martlets were particularly ineffective on special teams, typically one of their strengths. They went 0-for-6 on the power-play and conceded two power-play goals against in three shorthanded situations. This was a complete reversal from Game 1 of the series, a 6-2 McGill victory where the Martlets went 2-for-4 with the man-advantage and the Carabins were 0-for-4.
"We were flat," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith, succinctly. "The team that lost the 6-2 game played with a lot more urgency than the team that won the 6-2 game. It's ok though. We're still the same team that won the 6-2 game, so we'll be good to go on Sunday."
The Carabins jumped into an early 2-0 lead, with Gariepy scoring just 45 seconds after the opening faceoff, followed by her second goal at 6:16.
McGill responded less than two minutes later when rookie
Marie-Philip Lavoie struck for her first career playoff marker, at 7:42, assisted by
Melodie Daoust and
Katia Clement-Heydra.
Daoust, who has a league-leading eight helpers in four playoff games, now has a 3-12-15 record in just seven games since her season debut a few weeks ago. The physical education junior owns a 9-23-32 record in 17 career post-season contests.
Clement-Heydra,who improved her career totals to 121-176-297 in 201 games overall, need just three points to become the third Mcgill player to reach the 300-point plateau. She is two assists behind former All-Canadian defenceman
Cathy Chartrand, the team's all-time leader in that department.
After the first intermission, the Carabins came out with another quick goal, when
Laurence Beaulieu connected on a power-play at 1:25. They increased their lead to 4-1 on another power-play when
Jessica Cormier potted her first of the post-season at 13:12.
In the final stanza, Gariepy completed her hat-track at 5:53, a goal which chased McGill starting goalie
Brittany Smrke, who saved 11 of 16 shots and took the loss. She was replaced by
Taylor Hough, who recently returned to the lineup after an injury and was making her first appearance between the pipes in 10 games, since her last game on Jan. 31. The 5-foot-10 junior from Toronto turned aside all five shots faced in just over 14 minutes of action.
Collecting the victory in the U de M net was
Elodie Rousseau-Sirois, who had been yanked in Game 1 of the series. She turned aside 27 of 28 shots, improving to 3-1 in the playoffs.
MARTLET MURMURS: McGill leads the all-time series against the Carabins with a 36-11-0 record since they first crossed paths in 2009 but Montreal has won 10 of the last 19... The bitter rivals have crossed paths seven times this season and four of them have been somewhat one-sided, with McGill winning 3-2 in overtime, 3-0, 6-3 and 6-2. The Carabins have prevailed 5-2, 5-0 and 5-1, outscoring McGill 28-25 over the seven confrontations.
