Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Daoust and Loberg spell doom and gloom as hockey Martlets deconstruct Engineers

MONTREAL, Que. - Senior Melodie Daoust ignited the offence and sophomore goaltender Kayla Loberg backstopped the defence as the McGill University women's hockey team schooled the Engineers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on the most efficient way to construct a 4-0 victory in women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Sunday afternoon.

Daoust, a senior from Valleyfield, Que., scored twice and set up another, while the Toronto-born Loberg, made 19 saves to register her second shutout of the season. It was the team's third straight whitewash and fourth in their last five games.

"Kayla is a competitor, she competes hard," said head coach Peter Smith of Loberg, an urban planning major who didn't get into a game as a freshman last year but has now seen action in eight of the team's 21 contests overall. "When you get an opportunity to play, you have to seize the moment and run with it and that's what she's done."

McGill, which had a 32-19 advantage in shots, led 2-0 after the opening period and added a goal in each of the last two stanzas. The non-conference result improved the Martlets record to 3-4 against NCAA puck squads this season and 3-1 lifetime against RPI, a private research university based in Troy, N.Y.

Olivia Sutter was credited with the winning tally at 6:30 of the opening period. It was her first of the season, snapping a 14-game scoring slump. Daoust doubled the advantage to 2-0 at 10:29. McGill later extended their lead to 3-0 at 15:51 of the middle session, when Daoust help set up Alexandria Serpico, whose first marker of the campaign ended a 12-game goal-less streak. The Martlets added an insurance goal at 8:10 of the third period, when Daoust notched her second of the game. It was the 12th in 17 games overall for the team captain.

Senior goalkeeper Sara Till started and took the loss between the pipes for the Engineers, making 21 saves on 23 shots. Shw was relieved of her duties midway through the second period by freshman netminder Kira Bombay, from Nepean, Ont., who was beaten twice on nine shots.

RPI went 0-for-3 on the power play, while McGill went scoreless in their two chances.

The Engineers, who dropped to 4-8-1 overall, are back in action on Friday and Saturday, when they host New Hampshire for a two-game series. McGill, which evened their record at 10-10-0 against university opponents, resumes their regular season on Sunday, Nov. 29 when they host the division-leading Ottawa Gee-Gees (6-3). A win would put the Martlets (5-3) back on top for the month-long exam break.
