Box Score MONTREAL -- The McGill Martlets saw their two-game win streak come to an end on Saturday as they suffered a 7-0 loss to the star-studded Montreal Canadiennes in women's hockey exhibition play, Saturday at McConnell Arena.
The Canadiennes, who recently changed their name from the Montreal Stars, are perennially among the top teams in the Canadian Women's Hockey League. They iced a lineup featuring eight former McGill players and eight from NCAA programs, including five who have played with the national team.
McGill, on the other hand, was missing eight regulars due to injury, including their top two goaltenders.
"We had kind of a young lineup in there," said Martlets head coach
Peter Smith. "You know, we played a good team and it was a good learning experience for our kids. That game will make them better and our girls were disappointed in the outcome but I thought the third period in particular, we figured some things out and played harder. That will make us better, that's why we're adding these games to our schedule."
Six different Canadiennes lit the lamp, with former Martlet star
Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Îles, Que., scoring twice and adding a helper.
Leslie Oles, who graduated from McGill last spring, put the Canadiennes on the board at 1:37 of the opening period.
Caroline Ouellette doubled the visitors' lead at 11:41.
Montreal put the game away with four second-period goals, as Bettez,
Emilie Bocchia,
Karell Emard and
Alyssa Sherrard all foiled Martlet goaltender
Kayla Loberg. Bettez's second of the game, midway through the third period, rounded out the scoring.
Loberg made 34 saves for the Martlets, while former McGill great
Charline Labonte turned aside all 13 shots faced to merit the shutout. Montreal, which outshot McGill 41-13, was 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Martlets went 0-for-1.
McGill dropped to 3-6 overall, including a 2-3 mark against CIS opponents. The dinged up squad now gets a much-needed bye week over for the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. They return to action on Friday, Oct. 16, with a trip to Hanover, N.H., for their annual matchup with the Dartmouth Big Green. The Canadiennes (1-0) open their regular season on Oct. 17, when they host the Brampton Thunder at the Etienne-Desmarteau Arena in Montreal.
