Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A shorthanded goal by freshman
Grace Zarzecki proved to be the game-winner as the Harvard Crimson edged McGill 3-2 in a women's pre-season hockey game between two of the world's most preeminent academic institutions, Saturday, at the Bright-Landry Hockey Centre.
It was McGill's third consecutive one-goal setback to an NCAA squad and extended Harvard's undefeated streak to 10-0-1 against the Martlets since these teams first tangoed in 2006.
Harvard jumped into a 2-0 lead after the first period on goals by
Karly Heffernan at 9:12 and
Haley Mullins at 11:28 after McGill sniper
Gabrielle Davidson had been penalized for boarding.
The momentum changed in the second when Martlets
blueliner
Brittney Fouracres, a senior from Calgary, replied with a power-play marker at 5:15. Canadian Olympian
Melodie Daoust and rearguard
Kelsie Moffatt drew assists on the play.
McGill tied the game at 2-2 when Daoust took a pass from
Stefanie Pohlod and struck pay-dirt at 17:44. However, a late interference penalty to Harvard's
Miye D'Oench at 19:23 sent the teams into the intermission with time to think about how to get the upper hand in the final stanza.
The Crimson came out flying after the respite and Zarzecki, a Chicago native, swiped the puck from a McGill defenceman, dropped to a knee and lifted the puck into the upper right corner, past goalie
Taylor Hough, who started for the second-straight game after a spending most of the pre-season nursing an injury sustained in practice.
The shots on goal were even at 22-22 but special teams proved to be the difference, with McGill connecting on two of four opportunities, while Harvard was 1-for-2 with the shorthanded goal.
Crimson goaltender
Emerance Maschmeyer, who was named to the Canadian national team for the 2015 Four Nations Cup, started between the pipes for Harvard and saved 12 of 14 shots. She was replaced in the third period by
Molly Tissenbaum, who was credited with the win, saving all eight shots faced.
McGill, which dropped to 40-60-7 lifetime against NCAA teams, will close out their challenging three games in three days with a game against Yale in New Haven on Sunday at 2 p.m.
