Box Score MONTREAL --
Katia Clement-Heydra was in a hurry to snap a three-game scoring slump. Not only did she set a school record with the fastest goal from the start of a game at the 14-second mark, she tallied twice, including the game-winner and added a helper as the No.-2-ranked McGill women's hockey team skated to a 5-3 road victory over an upstart Concordia squad at the Ed Meagher Arena, Friday.
It was the fifth straight league win for the Martlets, who are now 70-37-3 in 110 lifetime meetings against their cross-town rivals since the CIS formally adopted women's hockey in 1997-98.
McGill actually jumped into an early 3-0 lead before the game was seven minutes old.
Leslie Oles struck for her league-leading 10th of the season at 6:22 to make it 2-0. Just 19 seconds later, McGill pounced again when
Stefanie Pohlod converted passes from Clement-Heydra and rearguard
Michelle Daigneault.
But just when you thought that the rout was on, the pesky Stingers rebounded with a pair of second period power-play markers from
Alexandria D'Onofrio and
Marie-Joelle Allard at 5:47 and 16:22, respectively.
Only 24 seconds later, however, it was Clement-Heydra to the rescue once again, striking pay-dirt at 16:46 to make it 4-2 for the visitors. Defender
Elizabeth Hillier and
Jordan McDonell drew assists on the play.
That score held up until late in the final stanza, when Concordia pulled the goalie on a power-play and McGill's
Erika Pyke found the empty net with a shorthanded marker at 18:12. It was the team's league-leading fifth "shorty" of the season. The Stingers rebounded with a PP marker just 22 seconds later but they ran out of clock.
McGill, which had a 34-19 edge in shots, struggled on special teams. They went 0-for-6 on the power-play and conceded three PP goals in five PK situations.
Taylor Hough made 16 saves and collected the win, improving to 5-1-0 on the season and 11-2-0 lifetime in league play. Two goalies toiled for the Stingers, with
Briar Bache getting the start and allowing two goals on six shots before being yanked at the 6:22 mark. She was replaced by
Katherine Purchase, who turned aside 25 of 27 shots and took the loss, dopping to 2-4-0.
McGill, which improved to a division-leading 10-2-0 in the RSEQ conference, will host the second-place Montreal Carabins (9-2-0), the top-ranked team in the country, in a much-anticipated showdown at McConnell Arena on Sunday at 3 p.m. The game is slated to be webcast live at
SSN Canada.
