MIRABEL, Que. --
Caroline Ciot from the Montreal Carabins shot a three-over-par 149 after two rounds to win the women's individual title and lead UdeM to the team championship at the McGill Invitational golf tournament at the Victorien Golf Club, Sept. 20-21.
Ciot shot with a record 4 under par 69 in the second round of the two-day tourney. The Carabins finished first of five teams with a solid overall score of 448, followed by Laval (479), McGill (487), Bishop's (535) and Concordia (577).
In the 12-team men's division, Laval's
Arthur Henkele won a playoff with
Daniel Gosselin from ETS -- both shooting a one-under-par 165. Laval continued their dominance in Quebec university circuit by winning the tourney title with a total of 589, followed by ETS (610), Montreal (611), Concordia (611) and McGill (621), to round out the top five.
The McGill women were third in the opening round but played excellent golf on Day 2 to place second, earning precious points in the league standings. McGill now stands second overall in the RSEQ circuit, a few points ahead of Laval.
Ciot, who shot a record 4-under 69 on Day 2, edged her Carabins teammates
Veronique Fortin-Latreille and
Julie Brossard by one and three shots, respectively.
McGill's
Juliette Pollet, a management freshman from Belgium, placed fourth overall, two shots back after a fine 2-over par round on Sunday.
"I was very pleased with the team's play and am confident that our women can finish second in the league standings, to qualify for a berth at the national championships next spring," said
Jennifer Newton, a coach with the Martlets.
The Redmen placed fifth on each day and their overall score was a significant improvement from their play in the Outaouais tournament in Gatineau in late August.
McGill placed two men among the top 10 in the 72-man field.
Justin Smith, a sophomore from Toronto, placed sixth (149) and
Jonathan Whelan, a junior from Rothesay N.B., was ninth (150), aided by a 2-under 71 on Sunday, McGill's lowest round of the tournament.
Pierre-Alexandre Bedard from Laval was third -- behind the aforementioned Henkele and Gosselin -- with a 5-under 68 on Sunday. He was tied with Concordia's Jacob Peterson who led after the first day.
The McGill tourney was the second of three events in the RSEQ university golf circuit, which consists of seven rounds with teams gaining points in each of the rounds based on their placing. The first two rounds were played in late August in Gatineau, with the last three rounds to be played in Laval in early October. Champions are declared at each event, lading towards the RSEQ championship tournament. The McGill squad will now have a two-week break before the final competition, to be held at the prestigious Laval-sur-le-Lac Club, Oct. 5-7.
