Davidson deadly as hockey Martlets manhandle Stingers

Gabrielle Davidson
Box Score
MONTREAL -- Gabrielle Davidson continued her torrid scoring pace with a natural hat-trick as No.1-ranked McGill skated to a 6-2 triumph over Concordia in women's university hockey at the Ed Meagher Arena, Sunday.

The Martlets have now posted 55 straight victories over their cross-town rivals, dating back to a 2-1 road loss at Concordia on Feb. 5, 2006. McGill, which outshot the Stingers 25-17, entered the second period tied at 1-1 but utilized a four-goal explosion to take a decisive 5-1 advantage into the final frame.

Davidson, a management sophomore from Pte. Claire, Que., sparked the outburst with consecutive goals at 11:45, 15:59 and 19:32. It was a league-leading third three-goal performance of the season for the sniper who leads all CIS scorers with 28 markers in only 19 games. She has exactly twice as many goals as Ariane Barker of the Carabins, the next closest scorer in the Quebec league.

The 5-foot-4 winger needs one more goal to equal the CIS single-season record held by Moncton's Marie-Eve Provost, who tallied 29 times in 24 games during the 2009-10 campaign. With one game remaining on McGill's schedule, the 20-year-old Davidson will be gunning for the mark in the season finale when the Martlets play host to the Montreal Carabins on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill were forwards Chelsey Saunders, Logan Murray and Olivia Sutter.

Replying for the Stingers was Alyssa Sherrard, who struck twice.

Special teams made a difference in the contest. McGill was 2-for-6 on the power-play and killed off all four shorthanded situations.

McGill goaltender Andrea Weckman made 15 saves for the victory, improving to 11-0 on the season and 26-0 lifetime in regular season play. She was also nailed for her first minor penalty in five seasons with the Martlets. The fifth-year neuroscience senior leads the RSEQ conference with a stingy 1.18 goals-against average and is ranked second in save percentage at .927.

Rookie Briar Bache was credited with 19 saves and took the loss for Concordia, dropping to 2-3-0 on the season.

Katia Clement-Heydra and Stefanie Pohlod each contributed a pair of helpers for the Martlets. Clement-Heydra continues to lead the RSEQ scoring race with 13-27-40 in only 19 games. She has a six-point lead on Davidson and is ranked third in the CIS national race,

McGill now owns a 23-1-0 record against CIS teams this season, including an 18-1-0 mark in league play.
