MONTREAL --
Audrey Gariepy and
Ariane Beaulieu each struck twice as the No.2-ranked Montreal Carabins rallied with five unanswered goals to surprise top-ranked McGill 5-1 in women's university hockey at CEPSUM Arena, Friday.
It snapped McGill's regular-season win streak at 43 games, dating back to a 4-3 shootout loss on home-ice to Carleton, Oct. 29, 2011. The Martlets, who had already clinched first place in the RSEQ standings, dropped to 17-1-0 in league play and 22-1-0 against CIS opponents overall. The second-place Carabins improved to 14-3-0 and theoretically, could end up tied with McGill for the division lead but the Martlets own the tie-breaker with three wins in four head-to-head meetings and only one more cross-town confrontation left on the schedule.
McGill, which saw their lifetime record over the Carabins drop to 30-4-0 overall, dominated the shot clock with a 34-21 edge but surprise rookie starter
Taylor Hough, making her second-ever appearance in net against the Carabins, was only able to muster 16 saves en route to suffering her first regular season loss in six decisions.
The Martlets jumped off to a good start when defenceman
Brittney Fouracres of Calgary opened the scoring at 5:05 on a power-play, converting a pass from
Kelsie Moffatt. But the momentum quickly shifted.
"After that early power-play goal, I would say that for the next four or five shifts, they were all over us," admitted McGill head coach
Peter Smith, "The goal that we scored seemed to build their momentum. Maybe subconsciously, we thought that it was just another day at the office. In all fairness to Montreal, I thought that they played with more urgency than we did. This is a bit of a boot in the backside for us and that's probably a good thing. It's all nice to have good skills but generally, the team that wants it more is the team that's going to be successful."
Less than four minutes later, Gariepy tallied her first of the soiree on a power-play to send the teams into the intermission knotted at 1-1.
Elizabeth Mantha put Montreal up 2-1 with another power-play midway through the middle stanza. The floodgates opened in the final period with three more markers. Barker netted her 12th and 13th, sandwiched around Gariepy's 11th of the season.
The Carabins went 2-for-4 on the power-play, while McGill replied on only one of seven opportunities.
Goaltender
Elodie Rousseau-Sirois made 33 saves for the win, improving her record to 10-3-0 on the season.
McGill will get a day to refocus before playing a road game at Concordia (5-12-0) on Sunday (Feb. 9) at 3:30 p.m. in a game slated to be webcast on the Concordia Athletics
website. If the standings don't change and Concordia finishes fourth, they would be McGill's first-round opponent in the RSEQ best-of-three semifinal series
Goaltender
Andrea Weckman, a senior who owns a 25-0 lifetime record in league play for the Martlets, is slated to get her first start at Concordia's Ed Meagher Arena this season.
McGill will get a chance to avenge the loss to the Carabins when they host Montreal in the season finale on Feb. 15.
MARTLET MURMURS: McGill's top-scoring trio of
