Dandy Davidson does deed, smashes scoring standard as hockey Martlets gallop past Gee-Gees

Gabrielle Davidson is the most prolific goal scorer in RSEQ conference history
Box Score
MONTREAL -- Gabrielle Davidson broke a Quebec single-season scoring record and Katia Clement-Heydra produced her second straight four-point performance as the top-ranked McGill women's hockey team dumped Ottawa 5-2 at McConnell Arena on Super Bowl Sunday, extending their win streak to 43 consecutive league games.

McGill, which swept all five games versus the Gee-Gees this season, improved to 78-12-7 lifetime against Ottawa, including a 38-game win streak in regular-season play since a 2-1 setback in Ottawa on Feb. 7, 2007.

Davidson, a 20-year-old management sophomore who leads the nation with 25 goals in only 17 contests, tallied twice to break the RSEQ mark of 24 set by former Martlet star Ann-Sophie Bettez in 18 games during the 2008-09 season. Clement-Heydra equaled that standard last year with 24 goals in 20 outings. The CIS single-season goal-scoring record is 29 by Moncton's Marie-Eve Provost, who accomplished the feat in 24 games during the 2009-10 campaign.

"Gabby's got the Midas touch but ironically, she probably had four other good scoring chances today and the puck didn't go in for her," said McGill head coach Peter Smith of his star sniper who was named RSEQ confernce rookie of the year last spring and has now  found the net 42 times in 33 career regular-season games. "She works hard and it's nice to see when that pays off."

Clement-Heydra, who leads the Quebec league scoring race and is one point shy of the CIS lead with 13-25-38, struck twice and also added a pair of helpers.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was Leslie Oles, with her 11th of the campaign. Replying for the Gee-Gees was Cindy Laurin of Buckingham, Que., and Vicky Lemire of Rigaud, Que..

McGill broke up a scoreless affair with a wild second period that featured five goals (three by McGill) and four power-play chances (three by Ottawa).

"The second period was a hard one to play because there were a lot of penalties which disrupted the flow," said Smith. "We probably got too emotional and drifted from our game-plan in that period but the girls did a real good job of regaining their composure in the third. We re-established our forecheck real well and played most of the final period in their end."

The Martlets added a pair in the final stanza, including the record-setter, unassisted, by Davidson into an empty-net.

McGill had a 45-22 edge in shots as Andrea Weckman collected the win between the pipes with a 20-save performance, running her record to 10-0 on the season and 25-0 lifetime in regular-season play. Ottawa's Stephanie Mercier made 40 saves in a losing cause as her record fell to 4-8.

Third-place Ottawa (6-11-0) will now play a pair of crucial back-to-back games against fourth-place Concordia (5-12-0) before finishing off the regular season with a home date against Carleton (1-12-4) to determine the final playoff positioning.

McGill (17-0) now turns their focus to their long-awaited confrontation with the No.2-ranked Montreal Carabins (13-3) who are eight points back with a game in hand. Every rendez-vous with the defending national champion Carabins has the potential to erupt into World War II. The Martlets, who were upset by the Carabins in the RSEQ playoffs last year, have claimed the first three meetings this season by scores of 5-3, 3-2 and 5-0. McGill will close out their schedule with road games against the Carabins (Feb. 7) and Concordia (Feb. 9) before hosting Montreal in the season finale, Feb. 15.
