Box Score
MONTREAL --
Katia Clement-Heydra collected four points and
Gabrielle Davidson tallied twice as the No.1-ranked McGill women's hockey team skated to a 5-1 conquest over Concordia at the Ed Meagher Arena, Saturday, extending their regular-season win streak to 42 games against RSEQ opponents.
The Martlets have also posted 54 straight victories over their cross-town rivals, dating back to a 2-1 road loss at Concordia on Feb. 5, 2006.
"We had a bit of a slow start, even though we had an early goal," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. "I didn't like our tempo in the first period and we gave up a few too many chances for my liking. But after that, we really limited their scoring chances and picked up the pace over the last the two periods."
Clement-Heydra, a fourth-year forward from St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., played a role in each of McGill's first four goals. The 24-year-old industrial relations senior set up Davidson's opening goal at 2:10 of the first period and assisted on the game-winner by
Chelsey Saunders at 38 seconds of the middle period.. She then scored the insurance marker with her 11th of the season at 19:14 to give McGill a 3-1 lead heading into the final frame and added a helper on a power-play marker by
Leslie Oles midway through the final period, which widened the gap to 4-1.
Clement-Heydra, known to her teammates as "Kitty", now leads the RSEQ scoring race and ranks fourth in the nation with 11-23-34 in only 16 contests. She needs five more goals to become the fourth player in McGill history to reach the century mark.
Davidson rounded out the scoring at 16:02 with her second of the game and CIS-leading 23rd of the season. With four contests remaining on the calendar, she is one goal shy of the Quebec conference single-season record initially set by former Martlet star
Ann-Sophie Bettez in only 18 games during the 2008-09 campaign. Clement-Heydra equaled that mark last year with 24 goals in 20 games. The CIS single-season goal-scoring record is 29 by Moncton's
Marie-Eve Provost, who accomplished the feat in 24 games during the 2009-10 season.
Goaltender
Taylor Hough, a sophomore from Toronto, improved to 5-0 on the season after making 15 saves for McGill, which outshot the Stingers 26-16.
Carolanne Lavoie-Pilon made 21 saves and took the loss, dropping to 2-10.
McGill now owns an unblemished 21-0 record against CIS teams this season, including a 16-0 mark in league play. They will host third-place Ottawa (6-10-0) on Sunday at McConnell Arena (3 p.m.).
