Serpico strikes twice, blows whistle on Ravens

Alendria Serpico (9) scored her first two regular season career goals in 6-2 win over Carleton
Box Score
MONTREAL -- Rookie Alexandria Serpico scored twice as the No.2-ranked McGill Martlets tripled visiting Carleton 6-2 in women hockey at McConnell Arena, Friday.

It marked McGill's 16th straight conquest over Carleton in regular-season matchups, dating back to a 4-3 overtime shootout loss on Jan. 22, 2012. The Martlets now own a 79-1-1 lifetime record against Carleton, outscoring them 430-56 since the Ravens joined the Quebec conference in 1999.

McGill, which led 1-0 after the first period and 5-1 after two, had a lopsided 47-9 advantage in shots -- including a 15-0 edge in the opening period.

"We did a lot of good things in the game. I liked our work in the offensive zone, but I still didn't think that we played the full 60 minutes," said Peter Smith, now in his 15th season as head coach at McGill. "We also had a lot of tunovers and missed passes in the first part of the game and I didn't care for."

Serpico, an arts freshman from Calgary, finally connected for her first two markers in regular season play after tallying three times in 11 preseason contests.

"She is an offensively gifted player and played well tonight," said Smith. "She has great hands and real good vision for the game and that showed today."

Defenceman Kelsie Moffatt led a quartet of Martlets who posted three-point soirees, each of whom collected one marker and added a pair of assists. Joining her on that stage were high-flying forwards Katia Clement-Heydra (game-winner), Leslie Oles and Gabrielle Davidson.

Oles, who appeared to be skating in high gear for most of the evening, was the target of numerous flagrant but unpenalized bodychecks. The fifth-year senior from Beaconsfield, Que., was particularly dominant on a night that featured a relatively balanced scoring attack. She ranks third among RSEQ conference scoring leaders with a 3-8-11 record in six contests, two points behind Davidson (7-6-13) and one in arrears of Clement-Heydra (3-9-12).

"The girls gave her the game puck afterwards," said Smith, singling out Oles, who has a reputation for finding herself in the penalty box but not on this night. "She had lots of speed and played with great discipline. Everyone seems out to get her and she kept her cool."

Even netminder Taylor Hough, who made just seven saves for the win, was inscribed on the scoresheet, setting up Moffatt's power-play goal, which opened the scoring at 12:33 of the first period. It was the second career helper for Hough, a 5-foot-10 junior from Toronto, who has played in 41 games overall.

Tawnya Guindon and Mackenzie Coney replied for the last-place Ravens, who dropped to 1-6-0. Starting goalie Tamber Tisdale was saddled with the loss. She was beaten four times on 25 shots before being relieved after 33:50 by Katelyn Steele, who made 20 saves on 22 shots.

McGill improved to 5-1 in league play and moved into sole possession atop the RSEQ standings, two points ahead the idle and top-ranked Montreal Carabins (4-1). The Martlets will get their shot to regain the No.1 ranking in the nation when they travel across Mt. Royal to take on the Carabins on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.

MARTLET MURMURS: Fifth-year rearguard Michelle Daigneault, who has missed eight consecutive contests since being shaken up in the game at Yale, Oct. 12, was spotted working out on an excercise bike after the game, which means that her return to the lineup is getting close... No update yet on the progress for Canadian Olympian Melodie Daoust, who had knee surgery in the summer... Gabrielle Davidson is expected to reach the century mark for games played in her next contest. She has played 99 games in a McGill jersey and owns an impressive 86-50-136 record overall... The third-year sniper is tied with Carly Hill (2006-11; 231GP: 52-84-136) for ninth place among McGill's all-time leading scorers, two points behind Canadian Olympic defenceman Catherine Ward (2006-09; 109GP: 34-104-138)... Ann-Sophie Bettez (2007-12) is McGill's all-time leader in points (196GP: 148-175-323), followed by Vanessa Davidson (2005-10: 203GP: 145-158-303), Katia Clement-Heydra (182GP: 109-158-267), Leslie Oles (177GP: 126-133-259), defenceman Cathy Chartrand (2007-12: 180GP: 80-178-258), Shauna Denis (2003-08; 195GP: 68-94-162) and Jordanna Peroff (194GP: 57-82-139).
