MONTREAL — McGilll team captain Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno, Que., racked up four points, including a shorthanded goal, and was one of seven different marksmen en route to a 7–1 victory over Ottawa in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.

The win was McGill's 40th consecutive win in regular-season play versus the Gee-Gees, since a 2-1 setback in the nation's capital on Feb. 7, 2007, and improved the Martlets head-to-head record to 80-12-7 in 99 lifetime confrontations against Ottawa.

Clement-Heydra, a fifth-year industrial relations senior who merited CIS hockey player-of-the-year honours last season, is now tied for second in the conference scoring race with six points, including four assists, in just three games.

McGill's offensive juggernaut came out blazing with all four lines contributing, as well as the special teams units, which chalked up a pair of power-play goals and a shorthanded effort.

"Having seven different goal scorers is something we didn't get a lot of last year, so having that this year is huge," said Peter Smith, head coach of the No.1-ranked Martlets, who have now won six straight games in league and playoff action, dating back to the CIS national championship tourney. "Every line scored and I thought our power-play was good, so there were a lot of little positives in the game."

Nevertheless, despite a 2-0 and 4-0 leads heading into both intermissions, Smith felt that, while they took advantages of some opportunities, his squad should have been more dominant through the first two periods.

"I thought we didn't really dictate the pace of the game in the first 40 minutes," explained Smith. "In the third period, we played fast, we played with good-tempo."

After rookie forward Cora Constantinou opened the scoring just over three minutes in, Clement-Hydra added her "shorty", just before the end of the period.

The Martlets kept rolling in the second, potting another two goals to extend their lead to 4-0. Logan Murray, a fifth-year forward from Calgary, struck early, while blueliner Brittney Fouracres, also from the cowboy city, added one with the man-advantage and ended up with three points in the contest.

McGill added three more in the final stanza, including a power-play goal from sniper Gabrielle Davidson, a junior from Pte. Claire, Que., who also collected a pair of assists and is now tied with Clement-Heydra for second-best among RSEQ scorers. Rookie Marie-Philip Lavoie of Pohenegamook, Que., and senior Stefanie Pohlod, another Calgarian, rounded out the scoring.

Forward Carling Chown, a senior from Nelson, B.C., struck for Ottawa's lone goal, spoiling goaltender Brittany Smrke's bid for a shutout with a power-play effort early in the third. Smrke, a sophomore from Oakville, ended up stopping 14 of 15 shots and improved to an unblemished 2-0 record. 

"Britt was solid, made the saves when we needed them and was very good on the penalty kill," Smith said.

McGill had a 38-28 advantage in shots and starting Ottawa goaltender Stephanie Mercier of Smooth Rock Falls, Ont., collected the loss, surrendering two goals on 10 shots. Mercier was replaced in the second stanza by Maude Levesque-Ryan, a rookie from Rimouski, who was beaten five times on 28 shots.

Division-leading McGill will put their perfect 3-0 league record on the line Friday, Nov. 7, when they host Concordia (0-1-1) in a rare morning affair for the annual "Score With School" game, which promotes combining school with sports. With some 500 advance tickets already pre-sold to the Lester B. Pearson School Board, the event will feature an early-morning puck drop at 10:30 a.m.

Ottawa (1-3-0) returns to Montreal on Nov. 7 to take on the Carabins (3-1-0).
