Box Score
OTTAWA --
Gabrielle Davidson delivered a dominating four-goal performance as the No.1-ranked McGill Martlets skated to a 5-2 victory over Ottawa in a penalty-filled women's hockey game at the uOttawa Sports Complex, Sunday.
The result extended McGill's regular season win streak to 39 consecutive games in RSEQ play and improved their overall record to 17-0 against CIS teams this season and 13-0 in league play. It was also McGill's 36th consecutive regular season decision over the third-place Gee-Gees (6-8-0) and improved their lifetime record against Ottawa to 76-12-7 in 95 meetings overall.
McGill team captain
Darragh Hamilton snapped a scoreless affair at 2:27 of the second period, finding herself on a breakaway after Gee-Gees defender Jen Delange tumbled. Her tally, scored between the legs of Ottawa goalie Stephanie Mercier, triggered a five-goal explosion in the period.
Davidson, a 20-year-old management sophomore, then struck twice to put McGill ahead 3-0 and later added another pair in the final period after Ottawa had narrowed the gap to 3-2 on on back-to-back powerplay markers from Camille Pauck-Therrien and Carol-Ann Upshall.
It was the third hat-trick of the season for Davidson, who leads the CIS with 20 goals in only 13 games -- five of them game-winners -- and now has 55 career markers in 66 games overall with the Martlets. Last month, the 5-foot-3 sniper led Canada to gold at the FISU World University Games in Italy, with a tournament-leading 13 goals and 22 points in seven games.
Mercier made 35 saves in net for the Gee-Gees, dropping her record to 4-6.
At the other end of the rink, McGill's
Andrea Weckman was credited with 14 saves and improved to 7-0 on the season, lowering her goals-against average to 1.14, which ranks third in the nation. The 5-foot-7, neuroscience senior from Kitchener, Ont., has yet to lose a league game over her five years at McGill. She now owns a 22-0-0 lifetime record in 24 regular season appearances and is 33-10-2 in 56 games overall.
The contest featured 46 minutes in penalties, including 30 to McGill.
"tt was a rough game, but a good one for our development," said Martlets head coach
Peter Smith. "It was hard to establish flow because there were so many penalties. Ottawa played hard but so did we."
The bulk of those infractions went to all-star forward
Leslie Oles, who was called seven times for a trip to the sin-bin and garnered a single-game school record 22 PIMs. Her last penalty -- at 17:36 of the final period -- was a game misconduct for arguing about being assessed a double minor (slashing and unsportsmanlike conduct), a transgression which generally incurs a one-game suspension from the league. Oles, who collected three assists in the game, is currently ranked third in the RSEQ scoring race with a 9-16-25 record in only 13 games.
Linemate
Katia Clement-Heydra picked up a pair of assists and now leads the league in scoring with 9-19-28 in 13 games, three points ahead of both Davidson (20-5-25) and Oles.
McGill, which outshot the Gee-Gees 40-16, went 2-for-5 on the power-play, while Ottawa was 2-for-8.
The two teams have a week to cool off before taking on each other on in a rematch on Jan. 24 ( 7 pm), at McConnell Arena.
