Oles continues to roll, nets hat-trick as hockey Martlets clip Ravens

Leslie Oles (#4)
Box Score
OTTAWA -- Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., continued her torrid scoring pace with another three-goal performance as the top-ranked McGill Martlets coasted to a 5-1 road victory over Carleton at the CU Icehouse, Saturday.

It marked McGill's 16th consecutive win in as many outings over a CIS opponent this season, including an 11-0 mark in regular season play.

Oles, who has 11 goals in her last seven games overall, ignited a three-goal outburst in the opening period, scoring at 3:49 and 14:47, sandwiched around a power-play goal by Chelsey Saunders at 11:39.

After the first intermission, it only took just a minute and 52 seconds for Oles to complete her hat-trick, with a power-play marker for her ninth of the regular season and the Martlets had a four-goal cushion heading into the final frame.

Carleton's Victoria Gouge spoiled Andrea Weckman's bid for a shutout at 7:02 of the third period. The Ravens had envisions of a comeback four minutes later when they received a power-play opportunity but Stefanie Pohlod scored shorthanded to extinguish any hopes of a Carleton rally.

"I was pleased with our jump in the first period, we moved the puck real well," said Peter Smith, head coach of the Martlets. "Carleton pushed back over the last two periods and we ran into some penalty trouble, which limited our offence a little."

The Martlets were 2-for-8 on the power-play and snuffed out all five shorthanded situations.

McGill had a 27-15 edge in shots as Weckman made 14 saves for the win. She now sports a 6-0 record and is 21-0-0 lifetime in 23 regular season appearances. The fifth-year neuroscience senior is second in the nation with a stingy 1.00 goals-against average and is ranked 11th in save percentage at .931.

Tamber Tisdale started between the pipes for Carleton but was yanked early in the second after conceding her fourth goal on 16 shots. Eri Kiribuchi took over and saved 11 of 12 shots over the final 37 minutes.

McGill (11-0) will return to the nation's capital on Jan. 18 to play the struggling Ravens (1-9-3) again.
