Martlet Hockey vs. Concordia (Home)
MONTREAL –
Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., and
Gabrielle Davidson of Pointe Claire, Que., scored two goals apiece as the No.1-ranked McGill Martlets trounced Concordia 7-1 to cap an unblemished season in Quebec university women's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
The Martlets extended their win streak over CIS opponents to 26 games, including a 20-0 mark in the RSEQ conference, to register the fifth perfect regular season in team history.
McGill dominated from start to finish, outshooting the Stingers 42-8, including a 16-1 margin in the opening period. They led 4-0 after the first stanza and 6-0 after two.
"I know it's a bit of a cliché but I really thought we had great contributions from all 18 skaters and good goaltending today," said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. "We moved the puck well, created a lot of scoring chances and our transition game was good. That's the type of performance you want going into the playoffs, coming off a high note and working on the habits that will serve us well down the road."
Daoust, a sophomore forward who won the CIS rookie-of-the-year honours last year, captured the CIS scoring crown with 54 points, including 21 goals, in only 20 games. Her point total matched the RSEQ single-season conference record set by former teammate
Ann-Sophie Bettez in 2008-09. Daoust, who finished with 33 helpers, also broke the league assist record of 30 set by Bettez the same year. It was a bitter-sweet weekend for Bettez, now an assistant coach at McGill, as her league record for most goals (24) was matched on Friday by Martlets forward
Katia Clement-Heydra.
After Stephanie Pohlod of Calgary opened the scoring just 11 seconds into the contest, Daoust made it 2-0 at 1:53 with what proved to be the game-winner. She also struck pay-dirt at 4:52 of the final period to make it 6-0 but Stingers captain Mallory Lawton replied just 68 seconds later to ruin
Andrea Weckman's bid for a shutout. Weckman, a senior from Kitchener, Ont., needed just seven saves to record the win, improving her record to 7-0 on the season and 22-7-2 lifetime.
Rounding out the scoring for McGill was
Kim Ton-That from Beaconsfield, Que., and
Logan Murray, also from Calgary.
Carolanne Lavoie-Pilon started between the pipes for the Stingers and conceded seven goals on 39 shots. She was temporarily replaced in the first-period by rookie Chelsea Hodges, who saved all three shots she faced before Lavois-Pilon returned to the net.
It also marked McGill's 47th consecutive conquest over Concordia, which finished last in the five-team Quebec league at 2-17-1.
"In terms of finishing undefeated, it's obviously good for us,'" said Smith. "The girls are real proud of that accomplishment. They worked real hard in every game and we've had a good amount of success thus far but certainly that first part of the season is now done and we're on to even more serious business with the playoffs. We geared up and looking forward to it."
McGill (20-0-0) is tentatively scheduled to open their RSEQ best-of-three semifinal series against fourth-place Carleton on Wednesday at McConnell Arena in a 7 p.m. start. Game 2 of the series is slated for Feb. 22 in the nation's capital. If a rubber match is needed, it will be back at McConnell on Feb. 24. The times and dates will be officially confirmed on Monday.
