Martlet Hockey vs. Carleton (Home)
MONTREAL – Sophomore
Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Que., scored twice and added a pair of helpers as the No.1-ranked McGill University women's hockey team cruised to a 6-3 decision over the Carleton Ravens at McConnell Arena, Sunday. Linemate
Gabrielle Davidson, a freshman from Pte. Claire, Que., tallied twice, including the game-winner, and added a helper.
It was the 24
th consecutive victory over a CIS opponent for the division-leading Martlets, who improved their lifetime record over Carleton to 69-1-1 in 71 lifetime meetings. The loss ended Carleton's hopes of a third-place finish in the five-team RSEQ conference and the two teams will clash in the opening round of the playoffs, which is slated to open on Feb. 20.
The Martlets, who led 3-1 after the first period and 4-2 after two, outshot Carleton 50-17, including a 23-3 margin in the middle stanza. It was a physical affair that featured 33 minutes in penalties, including 27 minutes to the Ravens, who were in penalty trouble from the get-go as rearguard Wendy Abramenko was assessed a body-checking major and game misconduct penalty before the contest was three minutes old. She hammered McGill rookie
Jessica Hutchinson, who was helped off the ice and dispatched to hospital for a further evaluation.
Daoust, who leads the nation in scoring with 51 points, including 19 goals in 18 games, made the Ravens pay dearly. She broke the ice on that power play at 6:29, then setting up Davidson 76 seconds later for another PP marker.
Kelsey Evershed, a rookie forward from Franktown, Ont., gave Carleton some life when she scored at 11;22 but McGill snuffed out any hope of a Ravens rally five minutes later when
Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., made it 3-1 with her CIS-leading 22
nd goal of the season.
“We were a bit ragged in the first period and turned over the puck too much,” said McGill head coach
Peter Smith. “But we turned it up a notch in the second, moved the puck well and did lots of little things well. We generated lots of scoring chances, especially the line of Daoust, Saunders and Davidson, which looked real good out there.”
Daoust added her 19
th marker early in the second to put the Martlets on cruise control at 4-1. The Ravens narrowed the gap to two when Sadie Wegner of Pembroke, Ont., connected on a power-play at 18:39 of the middle stanza.
McGill finally put the Ravens out of their misery in the final stanza, when Daoust set up
Chelsey Saunders at 7:47 and Davidson netted her second marker and 14
th of the season on another power-play in the final minute of play.
Taylor Salisbury made 15 saves and improved her record to 6-0 on the season and 21-7 lifetime with the Martlets. Eri Kiribuchi, a senior from Prague, was credited with 44 saves in a losing cause and dropped to 2-7.
McGill, which improved to 18-0 in conference play, will close out the regular season with a road game against the second-place Montreal Carabins (15-4-0) on Feb. 15 (SSN webcast) at 7 p.m. , followed by a home-ice affair against cellar-dwelling Concordia (2-16-1) on Feb. 16. The season finale against the Stingers has been moved to a 4 p.m. start at McConnell Arena, in order to accommodate a men's hockey playoff game that night against Nipissing (7:30 pm).
