Pohlod's penalty shot sparks rally as hockey Martlets conquer Carabins

Box Score
MONTREAL -- Stefanie Pohlod scored on a penalty shot to spark a three-goal rally and Gabrielle Davidson struck twice as No.1-ranked McGill skated to a 3-2 victory over No.2-Montreal at Arena CEPSUM, Friday.

McGill, which improved to 30-2 lifetime against the Carabins, is now 5-0 in RSEQ conference play and have won 31 consecutive regular season contests since a 4-3 overtime shootout loss at home to Carleton on Jan. 22, 2012.

The streak appeared to be in doubt after the Carabins jumped into a 2-0 lead on power-play markers by Kim Deschenes and Marion Allemoz midway through the first period.

But forward Ariane Barker was called for closing her hand on the puck at 18:22 of the opening stanza. That little opening was all McGill needed as Pohlod, a chemical engineering junior from Calgary scored on the ensuing penalty shot and it was only a matter of time before the Martlets pulled a rabbit out of their hat. It was Pohlod's third goal of the seaosn and only her fourth career regular season marker in 34 games with the Martlets.

The rabbit that sprung loose was Davidson, a finance sophomore from Pte. Claire, Que., who tied the score at 2-2 at 4:51 of the middle period and then connected for the game-winning tally at 11:43 of the final period. It was Davidson's CIS-leading ninth goal in just five contests.

The game featured 14 penalties, split evenly and despite the low score, the Martlets had a huge territorial advantage with a 42-18 edge in shots.

Carabins netminder Elodie Rousseau-Sirois put in another strong performance. She made 39 saves in a losing cause. The last time these teams met, she made 52 saves in a 5-3 loss on Oct. 27.

Andrea Weckman collected the win between the pipes for McGill, improving to 2-0 on the season and 17-0 lifetime in regular-season play. The fifth-year neuroscience senior from Kitchener, Ont., saved 16 of 18 shots faced.

The only negative for the Martlets on this day was their special teams play, which went 1-for-6 on the power-play and allowed a pair of PP goals on six shorthanded situations. The McGill power-play is ranked second in the league at 24.2 per cent, with eight  goals in 33 chances. The PK unit is struggling and ranked last in the five-team RSEQ conference with a 76.2 success rate (16/21).

The Carabins tumbled into third-place in the RSEQ standings with a 2-2 record, two points in arrears of Ottawa (3-2) and six behind division-leading McGill (5-0).

The Martlets will host Carleton (1-5) on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Carabins are off until Nov. 15 when they travel to Ottawa to play the Gee-Gees.
