MONTREAL --
Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., scored the game-winner as the No.1-ranked McGill women's hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit to double Concordia 4-2 at McConnell Arena, Wednesday morning.
It was McGill's 10th straight victory overall and extended their win streak to 36 regular season games. The result was also the 52nd consecutive victory for McGill over their cross-town rival Stingers, dating back to a 2-1 road loss on Feb. 5, 2006.
The event drew an announced crowd of 612 students from the Lester B. Pearson School Board in a "Score With School" promotion, which encourages school with participation in sports.
With a 10:30 a.m. start time, the Martlets appeared to be in need of some strong coffee when Concordia tallied twice in 18 seconds to late in the first period to take a 2-0 lead on goals by Kerianne Schofield (power play) of Wolfeville, N.S., and Alyssa Sherrard of Bathurst, N.B.
But the Martlets awoke from their slumber after McGill head coach
Peter Smith read his troops the riot act during the first intermission.
"We kind of complicated our lives a little," said Smith."We took a couple of penalties and when they scored, we were kind of back on our heels a little. We sometimes have a tendancy to not play as hard as we can against some teams... It was a chaotic game with all the crowd noise and to expose our girls to this was a good thing."
It took only 62 seconds for the Martlets to respond as senior
Logan Murray connected for her third marker in two games. They scored the equalizer less than seven minutes later when
Brittney Fouracres, a third-year rearguard, connected on a power-play. Both are products of The Edge School in Calgary.
Oles, a physical education senior, then put McGill ahead 3-2 for good with her sixth of the season at 6:37 of the final stanza, assisted by Fouracres.
As the clocked ticked down, thoughts turned to when Concordia bench boss
Les Lawton would pull goaltender
Carolanne Lavoie-Pilon for an extra attacker. Before that happened, however,
Gabrielle Davidson struck at 18:41 for the insurance marker with her CIS-leading 16th goal of the season.
McGill finished with a 27-16 edge in shots, their lowest offensive output of the season.
Andrea Weckman made 14 saves for the win, improving to 5-0 on the season and 20-0 lifetime in RSEQ conference play.
The Martlets were 1-for-4 on the power-play, while Concordia responded on one of five opportunities. The Stingers, who sit fourth in the five-team Quebec division, dropped to 3-6-0. They will close out the first semester on Saturday with a tough road game against the No.2-ranked Montreal Carabins (5-3-0).
It was the last game of the semester for McGill, which improved to 10-0 atop the RSEQ conference. The Martlets will hold optional practices through the December exam break. After the Christmas holidays, they will reconvene for a practice on Dec. 26, then return to action Dec. 27-29, when they host the McGill Holiday Invitational Tournament, with games against Western (7-6-1), Regina (8-5-1) and Moncton (4-8-1), respectively.
