Kat shows her claws as hockey Martlets pounce on Gee-Gees, extend win streak to 34

Katia Clement-Heydra
Box Score
OTTAWA -- Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., scored twice and added a pair of assists as the No.1-ranked McGill women's hockey team conquered Ottawa 5-1 at the UOttawa Sports Complex, Saturday.

The result extended McGill's win streak to 34 regular season games. It was also McGill's 30th consecutive decision over the Gee-Gees and improved their lifetime record against Ottawa to 75-12-7 in 94 meetings overall.

Joanne Cagianos, a third-year forward from Dorval, Que., opened the scoring for McGill, with her first regular season goal since her freshman campaign.

Clement-Heydra, an industrial relations senior whose industrious work ethic once again ignited the OCD line along with Leslie Oles and Gabrielle Davidson. The explosive trio is one-two-three in the RSEQ scoring race and accounted for nine of the team's 15 points collected on the day. Oles scored once and added a helper, while Davidson was credited with the winner (her CIS-leading 13th of the season) and set up two others.

The Martlets broke open a scoreless tie with three unanswered markers in the middle stanza and two more in the final period to make it 5-0.

"We got off to a sluggish start and for the first time in a long time, it looked like we had 'bus legs'," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, hypothesizing that sitting on the bus for the two-hour jaunt to the nation's capital was a factor in why McGill was outshot 8-3 in the first period.

Reports of the Martlets demise were premature, however, as they rallied to outshoot the Gee-Gees 15-1 in the second stanza and 15-6 in the third, to end up with 33-15 margin.

The Martlets were 1-for-3 on the power-play, while Ottawa was scoreless in their lone chance.

Ottawa's Asha Kauffeldt  responded late in the game, pouncing on a rebound to ruin Taylor Hough's bid for her first career whitewash with only 2:46 remaining.

"Too bad for Huffy," said Smith of his sophomore netminder who made 14 saves, improving to 4-0 on the season. "She played well and we were trying hard to help her get the shutout. We were all pretty disappointed about giving up that goal."

The Martlets Ottawa goalie Cassie Seguin was credited with 28 saves as her record tumbled to 1-2 on the season.

McGill, which leads the RSEQ conference with an unblemished 8-0 record, will host the No.2 ranked Montreal Carabins (5-2) in a much-anticipated showdown on Sunday at 7 p.m. It will be McGill's first meeting with the Carabins at McConnell Arena, since they were upset in the final game of the RSEQ playoffs last year. The Martlets are 2-0 against the Carabins this season -- winning 5-3 and 3-2 -- but both contests were played at the CEPSUM arena.

Ottawa, which evened their record at 5-5-0, will close out the first semester at Carleton (1-8-1) on Nov. 30.

MARTLET MURMURS: McGlll has the second-best offence in the nation with 4.38 goals per game (StFx leads with 4.50)... The Martlets have the sixth-best goals-against average (1.61)... McGill has the second-best power-play in the CIS (22.6%) but is ranked 28th out of 33 teams in penalty-kiliing (80.0%)
