McGill's OCD line plays havoc on Ravens psyche

Box Score
OTTAWA — Leslie Oles of Beaconsfield, Que., scored five points, including a pair of goals, as the No.1-ranked McGill Martlets skated to a 6-2 victory over Carleton in RSEQ women's hockey at the CU Icehouse, Friday.

The result improved McGill's record to 72-1-1 lifetime against the Ravens.

To the opposition, Oles is often a big headache to confront but this year, she and her linemates could arguably be considered an obsessive-compulsive disorder that McGill opponents will have to deal with. Oles plays on the Martlets "OCD" line, along Katia Clement-Heydra of St. Bruno de Montarville, Que., and Gabrielle Davidson of Pte. Claire, Que.

OCD behaviors are defined as being so excessive that they interfere with daily life. No matter what you do, you can't seem to shake them.  Cue the Oles- Clement-Davidson line.

That trio proved deadly for Carleton, playing a role in all six McGill goals and combining to account for 13 of the team's 15 points. Clement Heydra set up four goals and Davidson tallied a pair of markers and added two helpers.

"That line was flying today," said McGill head coach Peter Smith, who asserted that the trio helped kick-start a power-play that entered the game with just two goals in 13 chances. "One of the big factors in the win was that we we're real good on the power-play."

The Martlets PP unit went 4-for-9, while the Ravens were 2-for-4.

Defencemen Kelsie Moffatt and Brittney Fouracres rounded out the scoring for the Martlets, set up by the pesky, unshakeable trio.

The Martlets, who held a 44-18 advantage in shots on goal, led 2-0 after the first period and 5-0 after two.

Victoria Gouge spoiled a shutout bid by McGill goalie Brittany Smrke, a freshman from Oakville, who made 16 saves to collect her first career victory in regular season play. Gouge scored a power-play goal at 47 seconds of the final stanza and teammate Julie Vaillancourt added another PP marker at 13:56 to provide Carleton with a slim ray of hope.

But the OCD line took care of that and knocked the Ravens off their perch when Oles made it 6-2 just 49 seconds later.

"We backed off a little in the third period but that happens sometimes with a young team," said Smith. "We are trying to get our players to put the foot on the gas pedal for a whole game. But overall, I was pleased with our performance. "

Ravens netminder Eri Kiribuchi was credited with 38 saves in a losing cause.

Carleton, which dropped to 1-4-0, plays at Concordia (0-3-0) on Sunday at 3 p.m. At the same time, McGill will host the Ottawa Gee-Gees (3-1-0), who with a victory, could surpass the Martlets atop the RSEQ standings.
